Martin Schell

Obituary of Martin Wayne Schell

On October 13, 2016 we lost one of the good ones. Martin passed away peacefully, at Innisfree House in Kitchener, surrounded by his family and all of their love. Martin passed away in his 54th year after a valiant battle with cancer. Life began in Toronto and friends, especially Mike Krumm, remained steadfast through his moves to Montreal, Maple Ridge and then finally to Kitchener where he raised his family. The Youth Group in Montreal held a special place in his heart as he met many of his lifelong friends there and shared many adventures with them. Martin began his love affair with the military and military history when he joined the Pointe Claire Cadet Corp #2806 as a Cadet. There he found his best friend and closest ally, Jim Howell. He continued his career as a Cadet Instructor with the Army Cadet League of Canada in Vernon and Markham. He reluctantly retired to the sub-list as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Governor General’s Horse Guard at Denison III Armoury in Toronto under Colonel Jeffrey Dorfman. His career started with Canadian Pacific Railway and continued with Marcan, N. Yanke Transfer and BLM Transport until he finally found his niche at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as an Inspector out of Cargill in London, Ontario. Martin loved this job and those that he was working with. Family life began when he met and married his wife of 27 years, Karen Marchant, in Kitchener. They raised 2 upright and considerate sons, Brandon and Ian. Travel was a part of their annual traditions and he especially loved making Christmas special for them all, playing games such as cards, Scrabble and Sorry, fishing or tobogganing. Martin leaves behind his beloved parents, Harry and Shirley Schell of Maple Ridge, BC who dropped everything to help care for him. He also leaves sisters Dawn (Dean Helm) of Victoria and Robin (Craig Tampin) of Maple Ridge, along with his brother Jon Jay of Mission. Nephews - Luke and Kirkland, Brian and Scott, Vito and Cory, and Gavin will miss having him around. He was so terribly sad that he would not be able to attend Lydia, his niece’s, wedding. The next generation had already started and he was gearing up to spoil and play with Hunter and Adelaide, and Colby due in December. Family life comes with in-laws and he stepped up to the plate with an extra hand at anytime and as caregiver during Frederick and Mary Marchant’s failing health. A quiet and unassuming man, Martin didn’t make any splashes. Although, when the place and time were right his humour and sense of adventure were infectious. He said once that he tried to live a ‘good life’. And we, those that are left behind, will testify to the fact that he did. We will forever love and remember you – we will stand taller and stronger, knowing you are now watching over us – always believing. The family and friends would like to send their thanks to Hospice of Waterloo Region and Innisfree House for their care and to the CFIA and SLF GBIT for supporting us during our journey. A special thanks to our family and friends that loved and gave so much.
