Martha Taylor

Obituary of Martha Taylor

Born in Gooseberry Islands, Newfoundland, January 10, 1936 passed away on November 19, 2016. Predeceased by her husband Lorne Earl Taylor (d. July 14, 2003). She will be lovingly remembered by her children – Darlene (Liz), Paul (Pat), Lorne (Yvonne) and Rod (Allison); her grandchildren – Alex, Amy (Aaron), Scott, Nick (Kelsey), Christine, Robin, Bill (Danielle) as well as four great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Mimie Rich (Charlie d.2008), her brothers Earl Perry (Patsy), and Gerald Perry (Marie) as well as numerous nieces and nephews across Canada. Martha was predeceased by her siblings Sophie, Arthur, Clara, Bess, and Clyde. Martha moved to Ontario in the early 50’s where she met and married Lorne, a soldier in the Canadian Army. Their life together involved army moves from province to province, as well as to Germany, with their four children born in four different provinces. They settled in Newfoundland following Lorne’s retirement, and then moved later to the Kitchener/Waterloo area. Martha thrived working in retail as working with people brought her great joy. A piece of her heart always remained in Newfoundland and she was proud of her roots and involvement with the Facebook group “Descendants of Gooseberry Islands”, being one of the handful of people living who were born there. Martha loved to travel; she especially enjoyed her trips to northern Ontario to visit with family and her numerous trips with her nephew, Mike Altman and his family to hockey tournaments in the USA. In recent years she went on cruises, being able to fulfill her lifelong dream, this past summer, of visiting Alaska – even panning for gold. With summer holidays in Calgary, trips to the east with Anne and Ivy and cruises with family, many amazing memories were created. Her favourite times were spent with family, telling stories and laughing. She had a wonderful sense of humour and was quick to find amusement in most situations. A truly creative person, Martha loved arts and crafts of all types and her family and friends were the recipients of many hand stitched quilts and knitted items. Her creativity extended to baking as well – her pies, especially her apple pies, were often thought of as “works of art!” Her grandchildren will always remember baking bread with Grandma and listening to her stories of growing up in Newfoundland. Friends are invited to share their memories of Martha with her family during Memorial Visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo from 1 – 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, November 24, 2016 with a Memorial Service in the chapel of the funeral home at 2 p.m. Reception to follow in the funeral home’s Fireside Room.
