Obituary of Rev. George Alexander Sim

Passed away peacefully to be with his Lord, on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at at Derbecker’s Heritage House, St. Jacobs. He went to the waiting arms of his beloved wife, Idella (2002), his son Geordie (2007) and his grandson Joshua (2008). He was the loving father of daughter-in-law Sandy (St. Clements), son Brian and Arlene (Mount Hope) and son Craig (Hamilton). He will be dearly missed by grandchildren Heather Sim (Matt Walsh), Helen and Doug Schlueter, Jonathan and Lindsay Sim. He was adored by his great grandchildren, Dylan and Zachary Schlueter. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews over Canada and the U.S.. George was a native of Waterloo, attended Waterloo schools and KCI Technical. He began in the garage business as a mechanic and then trained in the auto parts department. He joined the Armed Services in 1941, arrived in England in 1942 and then was sent to the Remy unit (59th LAD) attached to the Ontario Tank Regiment. After the war, he again worked in the garage business. He and Idella were married in 1947. He entered the ministry under the Evangelical United Brethren Church and was ordained in 1961, which became the United Church in 1968. He served three congregations in 29 years: Tavistock, Listowel and St. Jacobs. He also served the Waterloo Legion Branch 530 as a chaplain for over 35 years and the Waterloo Presbytery as a visitation chaplain in the Guelph Reformatory and the Regional jails of Guelph Cambridge and the old Kitchener jail. Above all, George loved his family times, always ready for a cup of tea and a sweet. He will be missed. Friends are invited to share their memories of Rev. Sim with his family during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Monday, March 20, 2017 from 2- 4 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Calvary United Church, 48 Hawkesville Rd., St. Jacobs on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Drew Maxwell officiating. Interment to follow at Calvary United Church Cemetery, St. Jacobs.
