Obituary of Stanley Gene Guthrie

Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday June 28, 2017 at the age of 79. 

Loving husband of Georgette for 59 years.  Dear father of Jackie (Mark), Robert (Betty), Louise (Al), Laurie (Wayne) and Jim Marshall.  Cherished grandfather to Amanda (Robbie), Eric, Alexandra and James and great-grandfather to Oona.  He will be fondly remembered by many other family members and friends.

Predeceased by his brothers, Glenn, Ken and Jimmy and one sister Rose.

Stan joined the Regiment Queen’s Own Rifles at #7 Depot London in 1954 and was stationed in Edmonton, Alberta.  He then transferred to the First Battalion of the Queens Own Rifles in Calgary to train for the Korean War but never went.  In 1957 he requested to be transferred to The Royal Canadian Army Service Core in Camp Borden, Ontario.  In 1959 Stan went to Egypt for peace keeping duty for one year.   In 1960 Stan resigned from the army in order to be with his new family.  He then rejoined the Highland Fusiliers of Canada in 1972.  Stan was a longtime member and big supporter of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 530 where he served in many roles and as president.

Stan worked at the City of Kitchener as the Manager of Printing for over 25 years. 

The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to the staff of Grand River Hospital, CCAC, ParaMed and Warm Embrace, for their kindness and care that allowed us to bring Dad home.

Friends are invited to the visitation of Stanley with his family at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Thursday July 6, 2017 from 7-9 p.m. 

All are welcome to attend a memorial service/celebration of Stan’s life at the Waterloo Royal Canadian Legion Branch 530, 316 Marsland Dr.,Waterloo, on Friday July 7, 2017 at 4 p.m. with the service commencing at 5 p.m.
