Obituary of Viva Gertrude Voelker

Voelker, Viva Gertrude (nee MacDonald) better known as Curly. Died peacefully at home in Waterloo, Ontario, age 102 on Sunday July 16, 2017.

Born in Carlyle, Saskatchewan, July 7, 1915 to Dan and Maggie MacDonald, third oldest of 12 children.  Obtained her RN at Toronto General Hospital in 1938. Beginning in 1940 she worked as her husband’s nurse/secretary for his medical practice out of the house at 36 Young Street West until the fourth and last child was born in 1948.

She was an excellent cook and made absolutely wonderful pastry for pies - recipes that have been passed along through the generations. Family gatherings in the early years with grandchildren were often at what became known as The Christmas House, or at the family cottage in Sundridge ON. The memories will be cherished by all who knew her as the gracious and wonderful woman that she was.

Predeceased by the love of her life  Dr. Philip Andrew Voelker May 16, 1995. Loving mother of  MaryLou Israel (Jim)of Waterloo, Linda Voelker of London,ON, Cam Voelker (Kim) of Squamish, B.C. and Maggie Voelker of Waterloo.

Loving grandmother of Philip Israel (Terri), of Kelowna, BC, Cindy Israel (Pete) of Waterloo, James Israel (Janet) of McKinney, TX, Steven Israel (Olwyn) of Whitehorse, YK, and Jennifer (Israel) O'Sullivan (Terry) of Waterloo; Meghan (Voelker) French (Steve) of Colchester, UK, Chris Voelker (Christy) of Squamish, BC and Heidi Voelker (Marty), also of Squamish, BC; Katherine Hillock (Tommy) of Florida and Matthew Hillock (Emily) of Tahoe City, CA.

Loving Great Grandmother to Philip, Coral and Michael Israel; Stephen and Erin Helmond;  Eric and Alex Israel ; Quinn and Connor Israel; Kaitlyn and Keegan O'Sullivan; Aidan and Owen French; Gracie Voelker; Reese Winn Voelker, Sasha Hillock and Fischer Farella.

Due to the many family members travelling from distant places a private celebration of Curly's  life will take place at a future date.
