Obituary of Kirtan Singh

Kitchener – Dr. Kirtan Singh, known to most as “Darji”, 98, died Thursday July 20, 2017 comfortably in his home.

He leaves his wife of 72 years, Jogindar Kaur (“Mummiji”); his son Bhuminder Singh and his wife, Jagdeep Kaur; his son Gurinder Singh and his wife, Harpinder Kaur; his daughter Satinder Kaur and her husband Manbir Singh; his grandchildren Birin Singh/Arti Panday, Berneet Kaur, Jotan Foster/Kenny Foster, Jakeet Singh, Virtaj Singh/Sarah Sullivan, Hena Singh, Jyotpal Singh and Jasmyne Jagpal; and his great grandchildren Nalini Singh, Nilesh Singh, Nishant Singh and Maya Singh.

Born on June 14, 1919 in the District Jhelum of Punjab (now Pakistan), Darji studied in Lahore, Bangalore and the United States.  He obtained his PhD in 1966 from Pennsylvania State University.  He served as a professor of Mathematics for almost 40 years – first at Khalsa College in Bombay and later at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. 

While living in Nova Scotia, he was the pillar of the Sikh community, having been very instrumental in establishing the first gurdwara in the Maritimes. 

He retired in 1987 and moved to Windsor, Ontario where he devoted his time to the service of Sikh youth and community.  He taught Punjabi classes, established a University scholarship fund for Sikh students and was a mentor to Sikh youth.  Darji was an avid reader and author, having written three books on the Sikh religion. 

Darji continued his devotion to Sikh youth and Punjabi studies when he moved to Kitchener, Ontario in 2005.

Most recently Darji lived comfortably under the care of Mummiji in Kitchener, Ontario. 

A clean hearted, good humoured, dedicated family man through his entire life, he has left a positive impact on everyone he has met.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Darji with his family during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Saturday, July 22, 2017 from 9 – 10:30 a.m. Procession to Evergreen Crematorium, 230 Ontario St. S., Milton will begin at 10:30 a.m. with service at the Cemetery chapel at 11:30 a.m. Cremation to follow.

Following the Cremation (approximately 1:30 p.m.), a gathering will take place at the Golden Triangle Sikh Association (Kitchener Gurdwara), 2070 Snyders Road East, Petersburg, Ontario.
