Obituary of Herman Neff

Reunited at last with his beloved Isobel, who left us too soon (1996). Herman passed away peacefully at Riverbend Place in Cambridge following a lifetime of love and service for which he was always grateful. Keeping alive his memory are his children Jane of Elora, Peter (Lynn) of Germany, Richard (Kate) of Cambridge, and Tim of Toronto, along with the 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren who gave him so much joy. As a WWII veteran, Herman immigrated to Canada from Germany in 1951 to build a better future. He began his career in business peeling potatoes at Snyder's Potato Chips where he quickly rose to production manager and, through the company's growth, eventually became president of General Foods Canada's Hostess Division, and simultaneously, Vice President of General Foods. Herman was responsible for introducing Pop Rocks and ketchup-flavoured chips to the Canadian market, a matter of great pride for his grandchildren. In 1976, Herman retired from Hostess and transferred his business skills to Self Help Crafts Canada, the precursor of Ten Thousand Villages, bringing fair trade items to a broad market. After 10 years that allowed him to travel the world, he retired again and dedicated himself to travelling with Isobel and enjoying his family. Herman and Isobel touched many lives directly and indirectly through the Mennonite Church, being among the first to welcome Laotian refugees into their home, and assisting others fleeing the regime of the 1970s. They contributed generously to their community in many ways. At every gathering we learn of yet another example of how they lived their beliefs through deeds and not just words. Herman lived his final years at Fairview Mennonite Home, and then Riverbend Place in Cambridge. We are forever grateful to the staff and volunteers for the kindness and care he experienced. At Herman's request, there will be no visitation. You are welcome to join us in a celebration of Herman's life on Saturday January 24th, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Wanner Mennonite Church, 1725 Beaverdale Rd., Cambridge. Reception to follow. Interment will take place at a later date.
