Obituary of Kurt von Schilling, B.Sc. F.C.I.A, F.S.A.

Kurt passed away peacefully at University Gates Long Term Care, Waterloo in the early morning hours of December 19, 2015 due to complications from Parkinson's disease. Devoted and loving husband of Stephanie and cherished father of children Michelle (Stephen Butt), Peter (Joanne Gauthier), Erik (Karyn Stowe), and Alexander (Melissa Fama). Wonderful Opa to eleven grandchildren Sophia, Gregory, Willem, Laura, Max, Margaret, Adèle, Annika, Enzo, Charlotte, and Julian. Loving brother of Sigrid Kinnunen, Karin, Wolter (Edith Sherren) and Henry (Gisela). Predeceased by his parents Baron Bodo Peter Nikolai Gottleib and Baronesse Ingeborg Adelheid Margarete von Schilling. Kurt was born in Riga, Latvia on June 30, 1939. The first 19 years of his life were similar to many lives of Baltic Germans, living in Latvia for a few months and then, during and after the war, in Poland, and West Germany. He came to Kitchener Canada on June 12, 1957, the last of his siblings to arrive. He attended University of Toronto and graduated with a B.Sc. in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Kurt returned to Kitchener where his family lived and began working in the Actuarial Department at the Mutual Life Assurance Company. After successfully completing his studies to become an Actuary, he was received as a Fellow in the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) and the Society of Actuaries. Kurt was employed with the Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada, later Clarica Insurance of Canada. He retired as Vice-President and Chief Actuary in 1999 after 35 years of service. Kurt and Stephanie married July 3, 1965 and recently celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Kurt was very active in the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, including service as past National President, and was awarded with the Gold Volunteer award from the CIA in recognition of his many years of service. His community activities included service on the Board of Directors, Unity Life of Canada; the Board of Directors, Waterloo Lutheran Seminary; Group Services, Evangelical Lutheran Church of Canada; Canadian Mental Health Association, and the Canadian Baltic Immigrant Aid Society. He was an active member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church for 46 years and served on Church Council and Finance Committee. He served as the Canadian Deputy Director of the International Schilling Family Association and was a member of the Baltischen Rittershaften. Kurt was always proud of his family heritage and of his loving close and extended family. His greatest satisfaction came from the opportunities provided by his adopted country Canada.
