I knew Prem during basically two distinct periods of his life. First in Montreal during our period of study for a mechical engineering degree at McGill University. Then second during the last two years or so when we somehow reconnected by phone and email. In Montreal, we spent time together at his apartment studying and exchanging views on various school-related subjects. We also spent some more time together when we could on time off from school, and meeting up with and focusing on the local female company, as I recall. He was well liked by all, including the ladies, I have to say. The second time, years later, I could see he had matured considerably, but was also sadly struggling with medical issues and pain. He was fascinated with various subjects both technical and otherwise, encouraged discussion of these subjects, and displayed a far ranging curiousity. Apparently, he had also done very well for himself based on his own intuition and decisions in investing. Between these two periods we had each gone our own ways and lost touch, given all our physical moves, including me to California, and life's far ranging ups and downs. From the beginning in Montreal, I always felt comfortable with Prem, and so did others. He was always a warm and helpful person. He was the kind of person you want to see more of in the world. I am very glad to have known him, both earlier and later in life. My condolences to his family on Prem's passing. All I can say is he is now in a better place with no health issues or pain. Although I don't know them personally, from what I see and hear, his family are well on their way to carrying on his earthly successes and impressive spirit. Prem - thankyou for having been such a great friend. I recall first meeting you when we were both studying mechanical engineering at McGill in the early 60s. My fondest memories were when we used to study at your apartment. It was then that you introduced me to Indian food and opened my mind to your beautiful culture. I was always in awe of your inquisitive mind and your fascination with innovation apart from your dedication to solving any and all science and technology problems. This reminds me of our class project to build the Trochoid (attached photo) for the Plumber's Ball. Inevitably we lost touch for a number of years but I was never so happy as when we rekindled our friendship later in life. I have a particularly fond memory of the re-union that Jan and I hosted at our home in London and knowing the joy it gave you and Hannelore. You are always with me in my heart. RIP my dear friend. Jim and I are very sad that Prem has passed after such a valiant fight.He never gave up. Always looking for the next challenge. We will miss our long chats about everything and how to solve the problems of the world.We will remember the coffee and tea times on the front porch next to the heater shivering during covid and your smile.There is an extra star shining brightly in the sky.I am sure Prem is setting everyone straight in heaven. Prem was the first grandson of Shri Jai Ram Anand and Shrimati Draupadi Kohli and first nephew of uncles, Dr. Krishan Lal Anand, Mr. Manohar Lal Anand, Eng., Dr. Baldev Raj Anand, Mr. Tilak Raj Anand, Eng., Mr. Madan Lal Anand and Aunts, Mrs. Raj Rani Anand and Mrs. Raj Kumari Anand. My father, Mr. Ram Lal Anand, Eng., sent Prem to Canada to study Mechanical Engineering at McGill University in 1959, as Professional education was very important for him for all his brothers and for his children. Prem was honored in September 2021, when our youngest niece, Sonia Anand Cullinane named her first son, Collin Prem Cullinane. We migrated to Canada on Prem’s advise in January 1968. Prem received us at the Montreal International airport with a bouquet of beautifully wrapped cauliflower instead of flowers. His sense of humor never left him even when he was in great pain. During our two + months of stay, we learnt from him the value of hard work in Canada. Prem had wide span of interests, from Practical Engineering to Fine arts, from financial investing to indoor gardening, from Indian cooking to listening music, and was an avid reader in last 10 years of his life. Prem was known to solve all sorts of technical and personal problems for his siblings, cousins and children. Before the first cancer struck him his dream was to travel in a large motor home with all the siblings and have annual get together at a scenic venue. Unfortunately that did not materialize due to his prolonged illness and work pressure in USA. Prem wished Physicians would solve his medical problems the way Engineers solve engineering problems precisely. Whenever he visited any of his siblings he participated and volunteered to fix things around the house etc. His mind and hands never sat idle during these visits. Prem exhibited more interest in study of Hindu religion, philosophy, history, and in extended family and friends in India, Canada, USA, Australia, United Kingdom and several other countries in later years of his life. Prem, brother and mentor, you will be in my heart for ever. Out of six siblings, he was the first. And he was the first in theoretical knowledge as well as practical know-how. He was an Einstein to us. He could do anything. He fixed my home, office, cars and made many bird paintings that occupy a section of my house. A constant source of inspiration, love and encouragement. Prem gave me my first winter coat when I came from India in December 1974 when I could not afford one. Prem helped me establish a successful ethical practice of medicine. My two kids love and worship him for his help and direction in life. My grandson Colin Prem carries on his name. I am very sad for all of the Anand family as they grieve the passing of Prem. I met Prem through my treasured friend and colleague, Celia. Prem made a powerful difference and left a great legacy for his children and the next generation too. His love, support, wisdom and character have helped them grow in their careers and lives. Although a man of science, it seems obvious that Prem was so much more. He created beautiful art and always thought up inventive solutions to any problem! Clearly Prem was a gifted man who shared his many talents with his family and the world. He will be missed.
