First of all, my sincere and deep condolences to Nyle's family. Although my father was a colleague of Nyle when they worked at what was Superior Sanitation and later Laidlaw Waste Systems, I have a fond, lasting memory of this gentle, visionary man. One morning after the company switchboard was flooded with calls about 4 or 5 streets being missed for waste pick-up the day before - it was Nyle, a supervisor at the time, who led the charge on clean up. He was in the trenches with us, with rolled up sleeves, walking both sides of the streets, emptying garbage cans and hoisting bags into the back of the truck. That was Nyle, leading by example and smiling while he worked. What an incredibly wonderful legacy you have left us Nyle! You were the 'David Suzuki of K-W' - immersed in sustainable development and environmentalism decades before these were popular movements. Rest now from your labors . . . oh gentle and humble servant. May God cradle you and your family in the palm of His hand.

I am now a retired Professor of Environmental Science having served 40 years with Conestoga College. In the 80's Mr. Ludolph came to my classes several times to speak to my students. While my classes were exposed to many "professional" environmental experts, they were always most inspired by Nyle, for his practical, pragmatic approach to the problem of solid waste. Over the years we were all inspired by his success with the Blue Box program. In those days my classes were at the Waterloo campus and later at Doon. Since many students were in Retraining mode in those days, the mature adults liked the humble,yet assertive, approach of this "gentle" man. I,too, was always the "student" to such remarkable guest speakers. To his family and loved ones, please accept the condolences of many people who today will think of Nyle as they, their kids, or their grandkids carry a blue box to the curb. I will be sharing these thoughts with my own grandkids who have the weekly task of doing just that....recycling our massive resources. With fond memories, Ted Spicer.

I had the pleasure of working with Nyle these last five years on blue box history. What a legacy this man has left. The entire Ludolph family must be so proud. To quote Nyle, “While it is difficult for the average person to do all the things needed to help the environment, recycling was something we all could do to make an impact.” How true that has proven. I will miss your stories of creativeness and tenacity in finding solutions for the new program – constructing the first boxes; driving Mayors from other Canadian and internationally cities around to observe the blue box in action; how the original recycle symbol had four arrows!; your stead-fast confidence that it was the children that made the real difference in the acceptance of the blue box and how the term ‘We Recycle” printed on the boxes was for them. Such a tiny sampling of a man truly inspirational. I have grown very fond of you, Nyle, and feel sincerely honoured to have had this time with you. Kathleen

My friendship with Nyle started at the swimming pool about 10 years ago. He was a very kind man with a positive attitude towards life. I will miss his company and his life stories, but what I will miss the most is his laughter, smile and his big BEAR HUG. Thanks for the memories Nyle. Love Rina
