Obituary of Reverend Father Garfield Palangio C.R.

Palangio, Reverend Father Garfield (Gary), CR The Congregation of the Resurrection announces the death of Father Garfield (Gary) Peter Palangio, CR on Thursday, December 29, 2016 of PeopleCare A.R. Goudie, Kitchener. He was 81 years old, and in his 64th year of religious life and 56th year of ordained priesthood. Father Palangio is predeceased by his parents Corsino and Beatrice (nee Annett). Lovingly remembered by his brother David (Elin) of North Bay, his nephew Michael (Lisa) and niece Karen (Greg) Bullard, his aunt Rita Scappatura of Kitchener and Uncle Michael Palangio of Montreal, plus many friends. Fr. Palangio professed his religious vows in the Congregation on September 8, 1953 and was ordained to ministerial priesthood on May 27, 1961 at St. Peter’s Seminary, London, Ontario. Fr. Gary ministered as a Catholic educator at North Bay College (Scollard Hall), St. Jerome’s H.S., and St. Mary’s College, St. Mary’s, Kentucky. In 1977 Fr. Gary acted as chaplain at Bishop David H.S. in Louisville, Kentucky. Fr. Gary undertook the role of Parish Pastor at St. Cecilia’s Parish, Louisville, Kentucky and also Blessed Sacrament Parish, Burford. He was Associate Pastor at St. Mary’s, Kitchener. Fr. Palangio performed administrative duties for St. Mary’s, Linwood and St. Joseph’s Parish, Macton. Fr. Gary studied at the Divine Word Centre, in London, ON and Corporate Ministry program in St. Louis, MO. In 2002, he retired to Resurrection Manor in Waterloo. Fr. Palangio held a variety of leadership roles within the Congregation, including assistant administrator at Resurrection Manor, Director of Missions, editor for the Resurrection Bulletin, House Superior for St. Cecilia’s and Resurrection College House and was a member of a number of committees. Fr. Gary’s life was a long, active and respected one. He was very interested in the roles of school chaplaincy, spiritual director and counselling areas of pastoral ministry. His many years of faithful service touched the lives of his students, brother religious, parishioners, family and friends during his many years of dedicated ministry. His love of people were among personal traits recognized by all who encountered him. We wish to express our gratitude to PeopleCare A.R. Goudie Kitchener and their staff for the care they provided to Fr. Palangio over the past 5 years. Visitation of Father Palangio will take place at Resurrection College, St. Eugene’s Chapel, 265 Westmount Road North, Waterloo on Tuesday, January 3rd from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. A Vigil Prayer Service will be held at 8:00 P.M. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Resurrection College, St. Eugene’s Chapel at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 4th. Interment will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery, Kitchener. Reception to follow at Resurrection Manor. Donations in Fr.
