Karl Schnull

Obituary of Karl Schnull

Passed away, according to his wishes, peacefully in his home, in Waterloo on Thursday June 28, 2018 in his 90th year.  Beloved husband of Ursula.  Loving father of Thomas (Liz) and Martina (Chris).  Wonderful Opa to Lucas and Michaela Schnull and Sabrina and Kirsten Boyer.

Karl was born on the tiny, German, North Sea island of Langeoog.  It was there that he met Ursula.  They married in 1954 and immigrated to Canada in 1955, settling in Kitchener where Ursula had a sister and brother-in-law.  Karl began working in a metal fabrication company but when the opportunity arose to become a welding instructor at George Brown College in Toronto, they happily relocated to Mississauga.  They eventually looked for a vacation property and found the ideal spot on an island near Parry Sound, where they built a beautiful cottage with the help of many family members and friends.  They enjoyed wonderful summers there, with a steady stream of visitors from overseas and eventually with their children and grandchildren.  Karl also built not one but two sailboats, which he and Ursula took on many day trips and several longer excursions through the Trent-Severn Waterway and throughout Georgian Bay.  After a 28 year career which included teaching regular classes, night school and writing course textbooks, Karl retired and he and Ursula moved back to Kitchener.  In their retirement, they travelled extensively – first on long road trips throughout Canada and the United States, and later on cruises which took them to Europe, the Panama Canal and Scandinavia.

Karl was a quiet man, with a calm demeanour and a caring spirit.  He was hugely talented, having made many pieces of furniture over the years for their home and cottage as well as for his children and grandchildren.  In his retirement he took up stained glass, and his many beautiful pieces adorn the homes of family and friends both in Canada and overseas.

At Karl’s request, there will be no formal funeral service.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.  Condolences may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
