Obituary of Maureen McVicar
Passed away peacefully on July 23, 2018 at Saint Luke’s Place in Cambridge, age 76 years. Born May 10, 1942 in the Village of Swansea (Toronto), the only child to parents Arthur and Emma (nee Moore) Johnston, both originally of Ireland. Maureen attended Humberside Collegiate and the University of Toronto. In 1967, she married her high school sweetheart, David McVicar (deceased 2002) and subsequently moved to Kitchener-Waterloo. Maureen worked for Bell Canada before leaving to raise her three boys; Scott (Melissa), Mark (Yoshin), and Kevin (Monique). During this time she was active in the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) and Probus clubs and volunteered at the Schneider Haus and the Canadian Cancer Society. In 1987, she began working at the Centre In The Square for the performing arts, holding various positions, until she retired in 2004. She was blessed with six grandchildren whom she loved dearly; Owen and Leah; Eamon; Isabelle, Stéphanie and Olivia. She enjoyed the arts, hiking, travelling, and was an avid reader. In 2011, she was diagnosed with Dementia which slowly stole her from her family and friends. “You can miss someone who has died, you can miss someone who moved away, but the worst is when you miss someone you see every day.” In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Maureen may be made to the Alzheimer Society.
