Fern Scott

Obituary of Fern Beatrice Scott

Peacefully, on October 24, 2018, in Kitchener. Loving mother of Norman (Catharine Gilbertson), Douglas and Laurie (late Daniel Phelan), grandmother of Mary Scott (Graham Fleming) and great-grandmother of Adair Scott-Fleming. Fern was predeceased by Gordon, her beloved husband of over 55 years; her parents Albert and Curtie (née Allin) Hannam; brother Ralph Hannam; and sister Jean Pindar (late Kenneth). She is survived by her dear brother Bruce Hannam (late Joanne) and her nephews and nieces.

Fern was born on March 12, 1923 at home on the family farm in Brooklin, Ontario. During the war years she had jobs as a Bell telephone switchboard operator and a bank teller. She and Gordon married in 1945 shortly after his return from active service with the RCAF. In 1951 they moved to Brantford where they set up Gordon’s long-standing and much-loved veterinary practice. Fern was a full partner in establishing and developing the practice from its beginning. She was also a partner with Gordon in Elmscott Farm, their thoroughbred breeding operation which they enjoyed so much.

Fern was passionate about genealogy and spent countless hours researching the Hannam and Scott family trees. She was a proud Canadian and keenly interested in history and current affairs. She also enjoyed watching wildlife in her yard, especially deer and birds. She loved baseball and was a committed Blue Jays fan.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Village of Winston Park for their loving care of Fern over the last 4 years.

Cremation will be followed by a private family interment at Farringdon Burial Ground in Brantford. As an expression of sympathy, a donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated and may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
