I was shocked to hear of Garry passing away and thought that a bit of time may help to put down some words that would express my feelings, but it seems that I am still unable to put into words how I really feel.
I can still clearly see the day Garry came to see me at our apartment in Ottawa to encourage me to accept his offer of a PDF just as clearly the last time I saw him at his office. Even though I spent just a year in Garry’s group, we developed a professional and personal relation that has endured more than 30 years. We would meet up at conferences and I would stop by on the way to or from Sarnia at every opportunity I got to catch up. I will always cherish and value what Garry taught me both as a scientist and as a person. I will miss him - and the Christmas cards we exchanged for over 30 years. I seek solace in the belief that he is “in a better place” now.
On behalf of my family, I would like to express our deepest condolences to Flora and family on this very sad occasion.

Dear Flora,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Garry. I have fond memories of visiting with both of you in my youth. Even though you may not think about it, I’ve appreciated the time and thought you and Garry put into me and my siblings - wonderful home cooked meals, conversations over the backyard fence, and even a small gift after you both had visited France. These things make a difference.
I suppose I just want you to know that I do think of both you and Garry frequently and how difficult a time this must be for you. My heart goes out to you.
Sincerely,
Joseph ( Joey) Plust

Dear Flora, this indeed is a shocking sad news, I still can not believe that Professor Rempel had passed away so suddenly.
Although I did not have time to make to the funeral, I would like to use this opportunity to express my deepest condolences and share some great achievements of Professor Remple. As the R&D head of Arlanxeo Canada ( formerly Polysar,Bayer , Lanxess) and a former Ph.D student of Professor Rempel, I witnessed one of the greatest collaborations between a great academic professor and an innovative chemical company! Professor Rempel ‘s research work in catalysis with Polysar in the 1980s resulted in the building of a plant in Texas producing HNBR. His further work with Bayer and Lanxess continued in the next 25-30 years including 2 terms of NSERC industrial chair exploring many different research areas such as innovative catalysts, new reaction mediam. The work generated many New patents with potential industrial applications and also developed many young chemists. Professor Remple will be greatly missed by all as a great professor, a mentor, a creative research with industrial application in mind, and a friend. From Sharon (Xiangyao) Guo

I was shocked by the passing of Garry, and offer my sincerest condolences to Flora and the family members.
I offer just a few memories from an unlimited number. I started as an Assistant Prof. in 1964, and Garry was the first undergraduate student to do research in my lab, and was subsequently my first Ph.D. student. He completed his doctorate degree in 1968; just 3 years for this degree - a rare achievement; an accidental finding of some rhodium trichloride in the lab established the basis of his research over the 4 years that also stepped deeply into significant ruthenium chemistry ! His research background led him to do postdoctoral work with Geoff Wilkinson at Imperial College, who later received a Nobel Prize for findings mainly in rhodium and ruthenium chemistry. How lucky was I to have an outstanding student such as Garry, and I must mention that my 3rd Ph.D. student was Flora Ng, another outstanding student; they met in the lab, made an incredible successful research 'team' and later, of course, a wonderful husband and wife team. We have maintained close contact for 54 years, meeting once or twice a year either in Vancouver or at catalysis conferences. Garry and Flora were indeed also a major factor in my decision to spend my first sabbatical leave at the University of Waterloo in 1971. Of note, Garry had just added this year the Senior UBC Chemistry Alumni Award to his long list of awards and medals.

Please accept our deepest condolences.
We also would like to communicate that we are reallysorry for what it happened to Professor Rempel. We hope that all families, relatives, friends and Professor Ng can be strong enough in this moment. In memory to Professor Gary Rempel, we have tried to remember all happy moments that we had with him. For the few days that we saw him, we noted that he was a really happy man, gentle, pleasant and patient. We were very happy for all invitations made by him and Prof Ng. We are also glad for all support that Prof Flora Ng and Prof Rempel gave to us during our visit in Waterloo. Finally, we have prayed that he can be in piece.

Dear Prof. Ng and family,
My wife and I want to express our deepest condolences to you and your family on the passing of Prof. Rempel.
When I heard this sad news from Prof. Pan, so many precious life moments with Prof. Rempel flashed back to my mind, from the first time I met him in Hangzhou, China in 2001 to my last time with him in Paris, France
in 2014...
It is truly my honor to be one of Prof. Rempel's PhD students from 2002 to 2007. During these years, he always provided me with the chances to explore more research fields, constantly encouraged me to test new
ideas with his valuable guidance, and continuously honed my skills to solve difficult research problems. He has been working tirelessly to promote my academic growth and improve my research abilities.
Also, I deeply appreciate his kind commendations for me in the end of 2006, which enabled me to start my first professional job in 2007 as an industrial researcher in LANXESS after finishing my PhD study. Because of my job in LANXESS, I had my good luck to continue to work with Prof. Rempel in the jointed research project related to high performance elastomers until 2014 and got to know him more than just as his student. To me, he is the world-class scientist who is widely recognized for industrial application achievements and has highest level of principles and integrity for his work, while at the same time is the very approachable senior friend who has good sense of humor with a gentle and caring heart.
Prof. Rempel is the greatest Canadian I know in person and I will always remember him as my best supervisor and mentor. May his body and soul rest in peace and comfort...

Dear Dr. Rempel,
Last weekend, I attended the Engineer Ring Ceremony in University of Calgary. It was the first time I tried on the UW tie you gave me at my graduation. With this tie around my neck, I felt that you were with me during the whole session. In the same weekend, you left us.
Upon hearing this news, my feeling is far more complicated than sad. It has been my privilege involved with you and Flora in many occasions. You and Flora have also played important roles in my life. I view you and Flora my parents in Canada. You cannot imagine how confident I was in my beach wedding with you two as my “groom parents”. It seems still like it was in yesterday.
For work reasons, I have to be in Fort McMurray to start up a pilot plant; the plant turnover is literally today at this moment. It has been my dream someday that I can make you proud of my future achievement. But at this moment, I’d rather be here in your funeral and say goodbye to you in person.
Farewell my mentor, my role model and my “groom father”.
Love,
Justin

Flora, and Family;
I was so saddened when I heard of Garry's passing. I served with Garry on Academic Policy Committee and Chairs and Associate Deans Committee through almost all of Garry's tenure as Chair of Chemical Engineering. And I got to know him quite well. He was a man of the highest principles, strong will, strong conviction, and utmost integrity. I can still see his face turning red in a heated debate! Of course, he also had an uncanny sense of humour as well.
He will be missed!
Very best wishes during this difficult time for you,
Gerry

Dear Flora and Family,
We were very saddened to hear of the passing of Garry. We had heard he was seriously ill when we came through Waterloo a week or so ago and you were unable to come to our small past-colleagues reunion lunch.
During the many years we worked together Garry was our very valued and esteemed colleague. When I left the university I was delighted that Garry took over the Chemical Engineering Chair. He was an academic and scholar of the highest standard and integrity. His inventiveness and innovation made him into an important leader of the largest Chemical Engineering school in Canada. During my own career at Polysar corporation I continued to proudly champion the important growth of use of his technology which, unbeknown to the general public of this world, has led to great improvements in the quality of countless millions of their lives.
Gary was always a true gentleman and stood for what was right. he had a gentle manner with a wry smile on his face. We shall think of you and all the family on November 9th.
Sincerely
Ted and Rae Rhodes.
