Obituary of Katharina Ziegler

Katharina (Kathi) Ziegler passed away peacefully at the age of 93 at Grand River Hospital Freeport Campus on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. She is survived by son Rudy, daughter-in-law Ruth, granddaughter Teresa, nieces Sylvia (John), Elly (Mark), Martha (Cliff), Angie (Bryan), and nephew Henry (Martha, deceased). She was predeceased by parents Anna (Keil) and Adolf Fueck and sister Eleanore Eichel (Henri).

Kathi was born on April 1, 1931, in the former Yugoslavia where she had a happy childhood on a prosperous farm. After World War II she and her family were forced out of their home into work camps and were eventually sent to Austria as refugees. These were dark times for the family during which they suffered much hardship and abuse.

After living and working in Austria for several years she immigrated to Kitchener, Ontario with her parents to join her sister. Here she met her beloved husband Rudolf Ziegler and married in 1957. For many years they lived in the family home on Larch St. in Waterloo where they cultivated an enormous garden with beautiful flowers and a productive vegetable crop and raised their son Rudy. Guests were always welcome at their home, and Kathi was always quick to offer something to eat and drink. She excelled in cooking and especially baking, creating delicious and beautiful tortes, her famous kipfel, and an extensive array of cookies around Christmas time. When granddaughter Teresa was born, Kathi took much joy in spending time with her and had great pride in her accomplishments. Later in life, Rudi and Kathi downsized to a townhouse in Luther Village on the Park. After Rudi’s passing in 2018, Kathi moved into a suite in the Luther Village Sunshine Centre where she lived the remainder of her life.
