Obituary of Mieczyslaw Szester
Mieczyslaw “Michael” Szester 71, passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife Margaret and his son Olaf at Freeport Hospital on February 3, 2025.
Michael was born in Poland on February 12, 1953, the third and youngest son of Alexander and Adela Szester. After completing the Radio Communication Engineering program at the Maritime University, Michael spent years working for Polish Ocean Lines as a radio officer. His work took him to many places around the globe, which he circled twice; on his last trip for Polish Ocean Lines, his wife and son accompanied him.
After coming to Canada, Michael worked for Canadian Ice Patrol Services for several years, and then for COM DEV/Honeywell Company in Cambridge, ON.
Michael had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, and spent much of his spare time researching his interests. He never backed away from new opportunities, and relentlessly pursued truth. Blessed with brilliantly creative technical skills, he was able to improve the design of devices to make them more functional, and to repair anything that could possibly be repaired. But in addition to his practical skills, Michael was blessed with a love for poetry, art, and music both classical and popular. Languages were another keen interest, and Michael loved exploring their common roots and the origins of words.
Michael loved people, he loved jokes, and he always made time to help. Exuding openness, sensitivity and sincerity, he was well liked by everyone. He had a rare gift for cheering, inspiring, and lifting up those around him, leaving a lasting impact on all who crossed his path. His passing has left a great emptiness in the hearts of his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
No words can express the gratitude of Michael’s family for all who have been helping us from Christ the Saviour Antiochian Orthodox Church, and for the many, many other friends who have supported us during this difficult time. We have been truly blessed by your love and care.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Mark and Peter.
In addition to his beloved wife and son, he is survived by beloved twin granddaughters Iris and Lily (14).
Visitation will be held at Christ the Saviour Antiochian Orthodox Church, 96 Dunbar Road South, Waterloo on Saturday, February 8th, 2025 from 6-8 PM.
The funeral service will take place at Christ the Saviour Church on Sunday, February 9th at 11:30 AM, followed by a luncheon. Interment at Parkview Cemetery will follow the luncheon.
