Our Sincerest Condolences to Dawna and the girls. We were saddened to learn of Ian’s passing. Alzheimers is such a horrible disease affecting so many families. We choose to remember Ian the way he was as a distinguished Mathematician and a friendly
and caring man.
I am sorry not to be able to attend the service as I have no caregiver to stay with Ron on Saturday mornings. But our thoughts are with you.
Jan Mullin.

The dynamic duo have left the building. Ian McGee and Lee Dickey had an infectious camaraderie that I find somewhat
missing in today's environment. I had linear algebra with Lee Dickey followed by calculus with Ian McGee. I still remember
Ian's lecture on solving derivatives from first principle (and this is over 45 years ago) and on the blackboard and in chalk in
MC2065. This is how Ian's enthusiasm for mathematics became contagious. Even today when I sometimes tutor students on a
difficult topic I would think - How would Ian explain this! I would take a breath, smile and go back to first principals.
Your legacy is secured Ian. You can put the chalk down now.

Dear family and friends of Dr. Ian McGee:
I was in Ian's calculus section for only two classes in Fall, 1969. There were about 200 students. I sat in the middle of the lecture hall, pretty anonymously, beside my new friend Faye. Then I was transferred to Dr. Ponzo's section. And yet, the incredible Dr. McGee knew and greeted me by name every time we met in the corridors of the math building for the five years of my studies at U of W. He always did so with a big smile and a genuine interest in how I was doing. I taught for 40 years, high school and university. Even though I only attended two of Ian's classes, he was a major influence. I aspired to be as caring of my students as he obviously was with his. Rest in peace, Professor McGee.

In the fall of 1981 Ian was my prof for first-year calculus at UW. Within the first few weeks of class he had memorized the names of every student, and these were very large classes. I never had him as a prof again. After graduating, I worked at a software company for a few years, then came back to UW in the spring of 1989 to work in the Math faculty's computing support department. At some point Ian and I happened to pass each other in the hallway. He looked over at me and said "Hi...Robyn". Despite my not having been his student for almost eight years (and not having been in the building for about three years) it took him only about one second after having said "Hi" to fetch my name from his memory and complete the greeting. I was certainly not a standout student; this was entirely attributable to his dedication to his students, and to his remarkable memory. He always had plenty of time during tutorials to work patiently with any student who asked for help. And he always had plenty of jokes that gained him many mentions in the "Prof Quotes" section of the student newsletter, mathNEWS. My sympathies to Ian's family on his passing away.

To the McGee family, my heart is saddened to learn of his passing. He was a very much like a father figure to me when I was a student in UW in the 90s. He was passionate about teaching and showed genuine concern towards his students. I was staying in Keats Way for a while and occasionally saw him when I waited for the bus that was headed towards Connestoga mall. He often teased me about frequently losing one side of my gloves/mittens ~ it happened to frequently that he gave me mitten clips. You are in my thoughts and prayers. While I'm at the other side of the globe, I grieve his loss too. God bless.

I worked with Ian at UW and he was one of my heroes. He always listened to students and tried to help. I know of one such that stayed in UW because of his care and guidance. He went on to be a computer science student who has built and owned software. Without Ian’s support he might have quit

Janet and I are grateful for everything you did in kindness. First, we met you as one of our professors at the University of Waterloo. You touched our lives as a neighbour, and later as a humanitarian when you visited Janet at the hospital during her lengthy illness to bring us hope and laughter as you did with hundreds of patients. We recently shared conversations during our rides to our monthly lunch with other retirees and learned how Dawna and you loved and helped your family and others through the years.

My sincere condolences. I have often thought about your family in the past years but hadn't taken the time to visit for quite a while. I did have my suspicions about Ian's health since the Christmas greetings stopped coming some time ago. I am still in Germany, but hope to visit Canada again this year in September. I don't know if the girls still remember me as their babysitter In the early 70's when I was a student in Waterloo.
