Obituary of John Edward Hahn

With heavy hearts and deep love, we mourn the passing of Jack on April 16, 2025, at the age of 95 after an illness. Born on September 11, 1929, to Phyllis (Schweitzer) and Melvin Hahn, Jack lived a life full of passion, integrity, and quiet generosity.

Jack was a devoted husband to Pat for 65 wonderful years. Their love story began at Hahn Pharmacy, where they first met—a place that would shape not only his career but also his family. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. He was a dedicated father to Gae Corcoran (Chris), Cindy Crean (John), John Hahn (Ben), and Libby Benjamin, and a proud grandfather to Madeleine, Austen, Jake, Scout, Molly, and Phoebe.

Jack graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1955. A man of strong principles and a tireless work ethic, he worked alongside his father at Hahn Pharmacy, which their family had run since 1949. Even after the pharmacy was sold in 1984, Jack continued working as a pharmacist in the Waterloo region until the age of 84. His children all spent time working at the pharmacy as teenagers, learning firsthand the values of responsibility, dedication, and kindness from their father. Jack was known to the community as a reliable and attentive pharmacist that people could rely on when they needed advice on medication.

Beyond his profession, Jack had many passions. A lifelong golfer and longtime member at Westmount Golf Course, he played up to 180 rounds a year—something he was incredibly proud of. He was also an avid runner and took on his first marathon at the age of 64, passing his love for the sport down to his children. He had a deep appreciation for cars, owning more than 20 throughout his life, each one a reflection of his fascination with craftsmanship and performance. Whether it was a new set of wheels, a long run, or a round of golf, Jack embraced life with quiet determination.

After a day filled with his favorite activities—running, biking, swimming, or golfing—Jack could often be found by the pool, beer in hand, watching his favorite sports on TV. Though he wasn’t always one to put his emotions into words, his family always knew how much he loved them. His generosity knew no bounds, and he was always there when his family needed him.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, children, grandchildren, his sister Betty Little, and his sister & brother-in-law Judy and Al Philbrook. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, David, Carolyn, Stephanie, Brad, Jennifer and Stephanie. He is predeceased by his nephew, Phillip.

The family is deeply grateful for the support of the many healthcare professionals who cared for Jack in recent years. Special thanks to the team at Hospice Waterloo, where he was able to pass with dignity and comfort.

Cremation and a private family funeral service have taken place. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, condolences for the family and donations to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region or Hospice Waterloo can be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S, Waterloo, 519-745-8445, www.erbgood.com.

Rest in peace, Jack. You will be forever loved and missed.
