Obituary of Irene Helen Mitchell

Irene Helen Mitchell of Waterloo Ontario, beloved wife, mother and daughter, passed peacefully at the age of 66 on April 15th, after a long battle with lupus and related illnesses.

Irene is survived by her husband Greg and daughter Kristen; as well as sister June, brother-in-law John, sister-in-law Judy, brother-in-law Glenford and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, David and Mary Mitchell, sister Jean, mother-in-law Marie and brother-in-law Brian.

Irene grew up in Kitchener-Waterloo, and attended Eastwood Collegiate where she spent much of her free time active in the performing arts. She was also an ardent Scottish Highland dancer, competing in both Canada and Scotland. Irene felt a strong connection to her Scottish heritage, visiting family many times during her early years. Irene loved to travel and experience the joys of the world, with an open-minded and fun-loving spirit – such as riding a camel and exploring the great pyramid in Cairo during a bucket list trip to Egypt. Snorkeling and attempting scuba on one of her many trips to the Caribbean.  Irene also loved exploring what adventures could be found in Ontario during many camping trips that she and Greg took as well looking for amazing places to experience great local food.

Deeply empathetic and a care-taker to her core, Irene devoted her life to improving the lives of others, as can be seen through her 28-year career at Pioneer Youth Services caring for children and youth with special needs, and with her family – dedicated to the happiness of her daughter, husband, and parents.

Irene could always see the positive in any situation, and helped others around her do the same – even in her final days. The light Irene brought to the world will be greatly missed.

Special thanks to the wonderful paramedics who rushed to Irene’s side to care for and transport her to the hospital, and to the amazing doctors, nurses, and support staff at both St Mary’s and Grand River Hospitals who worked diligently to provide care and healing.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date for family and friends

Cremation has taken place, followed by a private family interment at Parkview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Condolences for the family and donations to Lupus Canada or Food4Kids Waterloo Region may be arranged at www.erbgood.com
