Obituary of David Edward Luft

After a very long illness, David Luft passed away at the Waterloo Regional Health Network – Queen’s (formerly St. Mary’s General Hospital) on May 1, 2025.

Survived by his wife Betty Ann Luft (nee Steppler), former wife Judy Luft (nee Caldwell), his daughters Joanna (Daniel) and Diana (Heath), and grandsons Hal and Sam Jeffries. Also survived by sister-in-law Ellen Luft and nieces Kelly and Karen Luft; stepdaughters Lynne Thomas (Lash) and Julia Berfelz; step-grandchildren Sadie Berfelz, Tristan Bradford Berfelz, and Madelyn Berfelz Burke. Also Grampa D to Omari and Damien.

Predeceased by his parents Edward Luft and Irene Luft (nee Forler). Also predeceased by his brother John.

David started his career at Walter Fedy in 1966 where he became a senior partner. David was an exceptional structural engineer who designed many structures locally, provincially, and in the United States (in particular, Florida). Notably, he designed the Centre in the Square in Kitchener, and both designed and coordinated the construction of the Control Tower and Air Navigational Facility in Ottawa. He was also a builder of detailed model ships and very fine grandfather clocks, and the designer of a beautiful garden.

Cremation has taken place. David’s family will receive relatives and friends during a memorial reception at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S, Waterloo, on Friday, May 9, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
