Obituary of David Alan Pennington
David Alan Pennington passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at the age of 87. Beloved husband of Susanne, cherished father of Krista and Shannon (Mark) and proud papa to Abigale and Jonah, David is also survived by sister-in-law Carrol Anne Curry, siblings Paul, Gary and Karen Pennington and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Nancy Donaldson and his parents Wesley and Frieda Pennington.
David was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and grew up in Windsor, Ontario. He attended Kennedy Collegiate where he was a basketball, football and track star, winning many awards and accolades, including Outstanding Male Athlete of 1956 and later of the decade for the 1950s.
He graduated from Assumption College (University of Windsor) and started a 30 plus year career as an executive salesman with Imperial Oil and later Consumers Gas. His career took him first to Hamilton where he joined the Cawesco Men’s Club and met the love of his life, Susanne, at a club party. Always a man with great rhythm, Sue first noticed him as the best dancer in the room, and they went on to 59 years of marriage with much dancing, love and laughter. They had two daughters and moved to Ottawa before settling and raising the family in Markham.
It was grandchildren that eventually drew Dave and Sue to retire in Waterloo. Dave settled into retired life with vigour as a devoted papa and a busy and dedicated groundskeeper for his neighbourhood association for more than a decade, before moving to Luther Village on the Park in Waterloo with Sue.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff at AgeCare West Williams LTC for their compassionate end of life care for David. Cremation has taken place and there will be a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made through donations to the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Donations can be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 519-745-8445, or www.erbgood.com. The family also encourages all to remember David by going out in the world and being kind and friendly to everyone, just as he was.
