Obituary of Royal Rene Philippe
Roy (Royal) Philippe passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 11, 2025 at the age of 87, closing the final chapter of a long and generous life.
Roy’s career spanned four decades as a chemical engineer before he answered a second calling as the Deputy Fire Marshal of Ontario, a career he loved and took great pride in.
He survived his sister Doreen Brash and brother-in-law Brian, his brother Don Philippe and sister-in-law Anita, his mother Helena and father Lucien Philippe.
Roy shared 62 years with his wife Susan, their partnership grounded in steady devotion and quiet humour. Together they raised Lynn (Stan) and Allan (Carolyn). Roy’s pride deepened with the arrival of four grandchildren, Emily (Mark), Geoffrey (Michelle), Trevor (Olivia), and Elise, as well as two great-grandchildren, Zoe and Oliver.
Beyond work and family, Roy cultivated many other passions including baseball, cooking, travelling, and gardening. He faithfully cheered the Toronto Blue Jays through good years and the other ones. An outdoor and indoor gardener, his dahlias and orchids flourished under his careful eye. Roy was known for his delicious meatballs, and was always happy to find a deal on a cruise to one of his favourite destinations.
The family offers heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers at the Dialysis Unit at Grand River Hospital for their exceptional care, and to the compassionate staff at Clair Hills, Waterloo, whose support made Roy’s final months comfortable and dignified.
A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a dahlia, catching a ballgame, or sharing a favourite treat with someone you love – simple gestures Roy would have appreciated.
Condolences for the family and donations to the Grand River Hospital Foundation may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
