PROFESSOR USR MURTY
(1940-2025)
USR Murty passed away on the morning of Tuesday, May 13th, 2025 at Toronto Western Hospital.
Prof. Murty spent nearly five decades at the University of Waterloo studying and teaching mathematics.
He is survived by his brothers Lakshmi Narayana, Vasudeva Murty and Bindu Madhav Uppaluri, his sister Durga Bhavani, his sister-in-law Parvathi Uppaluri and many nieces and nephews, spread across the world who adored him dearly.
He lived a life of meaning, pursuing mathematics, cultivating friendships, playing with children - nurturing their curiosity, traveling the world, and helping those in need. He did all this with his characteristic alacrity and effortless generosity.
His dear friends Prof. Bruce Richmond, Prof. Adrian Bondy, Prof. Claudio Lucchesi, Prof. Dan Younger and Mr. Vijay, all remember him fondly for his friendship, and also for the deep bonds he forged with their families. Prof. Kirti Shah and his wife Daksha and their children cared for him over the last several years with great affection.
His family would like to offer heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Toronto Western Hospital for caring for him in his last days.
As his family mourns him, he will be remembered for his resilience, his helping nature, and the easy glimmer in his eyes.
He taught us that you can walk a long way alone, without being lonely. And that our collective well being is rooted in the principles of dignity and autonomy. He left us the way he lived - quietly, and with grace.
We imagine him playing his favourite game of scrabble somewhere in the great beyond.
Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Saturday, May 17, 2025 from 9 – 10:45 am. Private family cremation to follow.
