Obituary of Dorothy Alvena Jacobs
Dorothy passed away peacefully on July 15th, 2025, at Trinity Village, Long-Term Care. She was 93 years of age.
Born on June 21, 1932, in the Township of Mornington, Ontario, Dorothy was the daughter of the late William Fetter and Agnes (Bender). Beloved wife of the late Bernel (Sam) Jacobs (2010).
Loving mother of Ken (Brenda), Bruce, and Cindy Mercury.
Fondly remembered by her cherished grandchildren Travis (Lisa), Kelly, Scott, Sam (Cameron), Kelsey and Sarah. Great-grandmother to Travis and Lisa’s boys: Cy, Sam, Jake and Riley – she would have loved to watch them play hockey and lacrosse!
Dorothy was the last surviving member of her family. Predeceased by her siblings Herman Fetter (Ed), John Fetter (Betty), Percy Fetter, Ruby Wilker (Bob), and Roy Fetter (Inez). She is also predeceased by many beloved brothers and sisters-in-law from the Jacobs family: Gordon Jacobs (Joey), Maurice Jacobs (Florence), Florence Sebert (John), Eileen Wilhelm (Ralph), Violet Cook (Norm), Inez Voll (Roy Fetter and Arnold Voll) and Hazel McNab (Bill). She was also predeceased by her companion, Roy Selig.
She will be missed by her many nieces and nephews from both the Fetter and Jacobs families.
Dorothy grew up on a small 10-acre farm in Mornington Township on the 3rd Line and led a quiet life — until she met that boy, Sam from the farm on the next concession over. They married July 26, 1952 at Poole Lutheran Church and were together until he passed on January 13, 2010. When not tending to her three children, Dorothy worked at various jobs: sewing suit jacket pocket hankies, working the line at Seagram’s distillery, pressing shirts at Pleon’s dry cleaning and making executives lunches at Mutual Life. Dorothy and Sam enjoyed over 30 years at their trailer in Mannheim with other family and friends. They were members at the Waterloo Rod & Gun club where they played Solo and horseshoes – quite competitively! Dorothy enjoyed fishing and was always excited to catch a big one. She LOVED tending to her gardens and also had a beautiful display in both the front and back yards. Birds visiting her garden and waterfall brightened her day, especially when the cardinal “Jack” and his mate “Mabel” stopped in for some bird seed – “but keep those darn squirrels out of my garden!” Dorothy enjoyed doing puzzles and crafts in her leopard-print sitting room. She was pre-deceased by her beloved dog, Nickie. She volunteered at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waterloo with the Ladies of Redeemer, serving lunches and making quilts for missions, often taking pieces home to finish what she started.
A special thank you to all the staff at Winston Park and Trinity Village Long Term Care, where she spent her final days, for all of their care and compassion.
