We lost a good one. A man who lived a full life with integrity, courage, and gratitude.
Ed Nowak passed away from cancer on August 8, 2025, after a courageous 42-month journey and 75 rounds of chemotherapy. He faced his illness as he did all of life — with a positive attitude, grounded strength, and unwavering support from family and friends.
Ed was the son of the late Victor and Anna Nowak. Ed leaves to mourn and to cherish their life together his devoted wife and amazing caregiver, Karen, his partner of 49 years. He is lovingly remembered by his children Angela Garland (Nathan) and Andrew Nowak (Sarah); and his grandchildren Olivia, Hannah, and Alayna Garland, and Ava and William Nowak. He is also survived by his sisters Goldine Pankratz (Jim) and Nell Peters (Martin); brothers-in-law David Thiessen, John Thiessen (Marisa); and sister-in-law Barbara Krick.
In recent years, what Ed cherished most was being an active part of his grandchildren’s lives. He loved watching them play baseball and hockey, always cheering them on. Weekly family suppers were a highlight — full of laughter, great conversation, and good food. Salmon was always on the menu. For the past seven years, special times at the family’s cottage rental on Otter Lake created treasured memories they will hold dear.
Ed and Karen shared a life rich with love, family, and adventure. Whether it was annual ski trips to Mont Orford, road trips out west, or visiting friends across Canada, the U.S., and Europe, they were always grateful — for the experiences, the relationships, and the memories made. Palm Desert and Hilton Head were two of their favourite destinations.
Together, Ed and Karen lived by a “pay it forward” philosophy — a value instilled by his parents. Ed was deeply generous with his time and resources. Over the past 50 years, he served on numerous church and non-profit boards, offering steady leadership and tireless support for fundraising campaigns. He helped and played key roles in raising, more than $15 million for causes close to his heart.
Ed served as Co-Chair of the Fairview Parkwood Craigwiel Communities Board of Directors. In recognition of his and Karen’s long-standing commitment and generosity, a significant donation was made in their honour — the new 192-bed long-term care facility is named the Ed and Karen Nowak Long Term Care Home. A deeply humbling and meaningful affirmation of their legacy.
Professionally, Ed enjoyed a successful 35-year career as co-founder of Roth Nowak Insurance Brokers, alongside his business partner, Dennis Roth. He took great pride in providing meaningful leadership to his team of nine staff, who together lived out their company’s motto: "Honesty, integrity, and good judgment."
Ed was an avid golfer and a long-time member of Deer Ridge Golf Club for over 30 years. A passionate skier, he conquered over 30 mountains and resorts with friends. More recently, he discovered curling and developed strong friendships at the Galt Curling Club during the past five years. For Ed, the camaraderie and connections were as important as the activity itself.
He was also a wonderful cook who loved pairing great meals with good wine. Whether it was family dinners or gatherings with friends, Ed made sure everyone was well-fed and enjoying themselves. He was always eager to share recipes, spices, and cooking tips.
Though Ed far exceeded expectations in his cancer journey, he did not walk it alone. Ed and Karen were profoundly grateful for the care and compassion they received from the Grand River Cancer Centre, including Dr. Hubay and her oncology team, Dr. Russek and her palliative care team, the nurses in the chemo suites, and the incredible team from Care Partners during Ed’s final days. A heartfelt thank you to dear friend and retired caregiver Dr. Elliot Williamson for his unwavering support and care throughout this challenging time.
Ed had a unique gift — he could brighten a room just by entering it. He made life better for those around him, and many lives are richer because he was a part of them.
Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Thursday, August 14 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m.
The funeral service will take place at Waterloo North Mennonite Church, 100 Benjamin Road, Waterloo on Friday, August 15, 2025 at 11a.m. A reception will follow. Private Family Interment will take place at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
