Obituary of Larry R.G. Martin

Larry Roland Gibbs Martin, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2025 with his family by his side. Larry was born in Kingston Ontario on July 23, 1937 to Daisy and Edward Martin. Larry attended Queen’s University where he received a Bachelor of Arts (History and Geography) Degree.  His love of learning then led him to pursue two Master’s Degrees (Geography and Urban Planning) and a Doctorate Degree (Metropolitan Studies) at Syracuse University in New York. After his studies, Larry returned to Canada to become a professor at the University of Waterloo where he dedicated his life’s work to teaching, researching and supporting student success.

Beloved husband and friend to his wife Pauline (nee Gibson) for over 64 years. Cherished father of his daughter Lee Wideman and husband Brian and of his son Edward (Ted) Martin and wife Jane. Survived by his loving sister, Kathleen Moorehead, his brother-in-law Malcom Gibson and sister-in-law Vicki Gibson.

Sadly missed by his grandchildren Sarah and Rachel Wideman and Daisy, Eleanor and Katie Martin. Predeceased by his parents Daisy and Edward Martin, his daughter Sara Martin and his brothers-in-law, Robert Gibson and Thomas Moorehead.

Larry took advantage of everything life could offer him. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family and embraced the opportunity to meet new people. Larry loved the outdoors and especially loved sailing Lake Ontario with his young family and then Georgian Bay with Pauline. Larry and Pauline also travelled extensively in Europe, Indonesia and Hong Kong. Larry took great pleasure in sharing his adventurous spirit with his family including skiing, hiking and recounting stories from his childhood. He was an avid canoer, photographer and snowshoer.
