This is one of the many ways I will remember David -- at rallies and demonstrations and meetings, in all kinds of weather. I'm not sure he was at this Bill 23/ Keep Your Hands Off The Greenbelt rally, but I know he was often a sign captain, a depot to pick up lawn signs to save farmland, protect public healthcare and the Greenbelt. I especially remember he and Mary carrying the Council of Canadians banner at numerous rallies and meetings. The event wasn't complete until they showed up with the yellow banner. We miss him so much already -- and it's just beginning. Thank you for inspiring us all, for so many years.

We are so sad to hear of David's passing. It has brought up a flood of memories going back to the late 1970s in Edmonton and thereafter. David was one of the good guys, both as a colleague, friend and citizen. As a colleague, welcoming and supportive. As a friend, reliable and generous. As a citizen, always willing to contribute--all the way back to the time of the arrival of refugees from Southeast Asia. Mary's and his involvement then of course changed their lives forever.

My family and I will be forever grateful to David for the help and support he, and Mary, provided when we landed in Edmonton in summer 1989 as poor emigrants from Poland. They welcomed us warmly and offered their house for one month while they went on a family vacation. This allowed us to get established in Edmonton, find a place to live, finalize a range of emigration formalities. All this would have been very stressful without the safety and warmth of their house. Later, David helped me in many different ways to establish myself professionally at the Department of Anthropology, University of Alberta, with regards to teaching and research. After he retired and left Edmonton, I thought of him frequently and mentioned his name on many occasions as someone without their friendship and counsel my professional life would never be the same. David was a very good man. He will forever retain frequent presence in my thoughts. Thank you, David!

McKernan Belgravia and the world at large was made better by David's presence and contributions. From childhood to adulthood, David could be counted on to make a witty joke, advocate for social justice, and ensure the dinner menu was restaurant level quality. A kind and loving father figure, David's kindness extended to his children's friends as well. His home was always open to us. Even in my late thirties, David would still message when Claire was visiting and I was coming by, to confirm dietary restrictions and let me know he and Mary were looking forward to seeing me. With great sadness, the Sproule family says goodbye and expresses gratitude to David, for a life well lived and one marked by warmth and compassion.

Steve and I are so sorry to hear about your loss. David was chair of the department of Anthropology at the University of Alberta when I joined the department in 1991. He was always there with support and encouragement not only for me but for all department members, and he and Mary offered us hospitality in their home often. Here are two photos: David was a guest at a conference banquet at Fort Edmonton for an event that I organized in 1993, and David and Mary joined us to celebrate my father's ninetieth birthday in 1997. It was a loss for the department and the university when they left, and we missed the Lubell family greatly. I will be donating to Doctors without Borders Canada in his memory.

The photo on the right is of our mother Winifred Milius Lubell taken in her studio in her 80s in Wellfleet Cape Cod. She is holding a Mr Punch puppet made by the critic and writer Edmund Wilson and also a self portrait done in the 1930s. These two objects are still in the family.

David Lubell was a member of the Architectural Conservancy North Waterloo Region Branch. My wife and I moved to Waterloo in 2005 in the same year as David and Mary and we shared an interest in doing appropriate restoration of our homes. David often attended ACO meetings and was a good friend to heritage architecture. He trained as an archaeologist but his passion for social justice was what I admired the most. Just last year I attended a reception of COMPASS Refugee Centre and so I mentioned it to him. While he had not attended the meeting since he was on therapy at the time, he said “Oh, yes, we have supported that group for several years”. And I thought: I should have known. David leaves such a big hole in our hearts. He was there for the Council of Canadians, the Fight for Farmland, Amnesty International, heritage meetings, divestment efforts, climate events. I’m sure I’ve missed a half dozen or so causes. I will be thinking about him when the Kincardine Scottish lead off next week’s Terry Fox Run. We will miss him dearly.

I am very sorry to hear of David's passing. He was always a good friend to my husband Cliff and me and he was the very first to welcome us to the Department of Anthropology in Edmonton, even before we had actually arrived there in 1971! A year and a half ago when Cliff passed away, David was very kind and helpful to me in locating former students from the Department and I appreciated his thoughtfulness. Ana and I are deeply shocked by David’s decease. He has a been a professional reference and a very important influence in my career as an archaeologist, but, above all, a friend and a very good person. I met David over ten years ago when I joined Group Nine, the local chapter of Amnesty International. He and Mary were very welcoming and inspiring in their commitment to human rights and social justice. In the last few years as David was battling cancer, he continued to play a leadership role in the group. One of my favourite memories of him is hearing him tell of his early exposure to political issues as a "red diaper baby"! I will miss him greatly.

I first met Dr. David Lubell at a train station in Europe in the early 2000s, and the first thing we did was share a bottle of vinho verde at a café. From that day on, he became more than a university professor to me, he became a true friend. He also had a wonderful sense of humour; I will never forget how, years later, he looked at me with mock seriousness and questioned my life choices… simply because I had bought a Dr Pepper. During a stay in Edmonton, David and Mary, generously welcomed me and my family into their home. His kindness and support, especially in difficult times, meant more than I can say. David was deeply respected in the scientific community, devoted to his students and colleagues. He had countless stories about the early days of archaeology and the colourful characters who shaped it. It is with great sadness that I learned the news of his passing. I offer my heartfelt condolences to Mary, Claire and all the family, colleagues, and friends.
