The sun was shining for you today Roy. Give Mom a hug from us. Rest in Peace until we meet again. We love you.
Eulogy for Dad
Dad was born on a cold winter's day December 16th 1938 in the kitchen of the family farmhouse. Dad along with his brother Ed enjoyed life on the farm where their love for homemade pies began early. Their mother once told them that she would bake as many pies as they could eat in one week. They rose to the challenge, sharing 27 pies together, Many glasses of hard cider stories and laughter were shared between them during their time growing up.
Dad was always ready to take on a challenge. One of his greatest accomplishments was spending months rebuilding the family cottage which we all came to love and enjoy over many summers.
Dad had a lot of hobbies that brought him joy, riding his bike, playing crokinole, watching boxing, garage saling or exploring thrift stores. He was proud to tell Mom he bought her something new even if it came from the thrift store.
His lifelong passion though, was collecting pencils, unsharpened with an eraser. A collection that eventually grew to more than 1000. I will continue adding to it to honour his legacy.
Another thing that Dad enjoyed was spending time in the Bush. He used to tell me he loved planting trees, and he loved cutting them down. It was one of the many ways he found peace in nature.
Some of dad's many memorable phrases that will never be forgotten are “grandpa always said if you wait long enough, they’ll be nobody coming” “Apple pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze “ “save your fork” shut the lights off close the fridge door and “ lovey” the name he so often used for Mom, especially when asking her to make one of his favourite meals, noodles and tomato soup.
Dad was a man who noticed details, cared deeply about others and approached everything he did with thoughtfulness and care. He built strong friendships and cherished his family above all else. Whether he was sharing a story, lending a helping hand or just quietly being there he left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
In his final days even when words were few his love was still so clear. I'll never forget the moment he gave me a wink, a simple perfect gesture that said everything, love comfort and goodbye.
Dad thank you for everything you were, for your laughter your lessons and your love you'll always be part of us in every story, every smile and every quiet moment.
