November 12, 1936 - September 27, 2025
Anastasios Stathopulos from Waterloo but more recently living in Vancouver, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, September 27, 2025.
Anastasios is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years Alexandra Stathopulos (nee Xirogiannis), his loving children Pieter (Jill) Stathis, Gean (Andy) Rhodes, and Helen (Laurent) Stathopulos. Proud “Pappou” to his six grandchildren, Oli, Zander, Willie, Charlie, Alexandra and Pierre.
Anastasios was born to Panagiotis and Eugenia Stathopulos in Tripyla, Messinia, Greece on November 12, 1936. He immigrated to Canada in 1967 and lived with his growing family in his beloved house on Murdock Avenue, Waterloo for almost 50 years. Anastasios had a smile and a kind word for everyone and he was universally loved and a role model in his community.
Always intellectually curious, Anastasios insisted on continuing his education even in the context of an impoverished rural post-war Greece. He spoke and wrote impeccable Greek and with his travels and adventurous spirit he learned English, French, German, and Italian as well. He had the map of the world in his head and modern and ancient history at his fingertips. A published author, he wrote over 70 articles for his hometown literary journal, Filiatra magazine. His personal essays were both funny and moving with many delicate details about his Greek childhood and his family’s deep ties to the country and region that he loved so well.
Visitation will be held at the Erb and Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo on Friday, October 10th from 6pm-8pm with Trisagion Prayers at 7:00pm.
The funeral service will be held at Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 527 Bridgeport Road, Kitchener on Saturday, October 11th at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo.
