Obituary of Jean Elizabeth Sutherland
It is with love and gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Jean Sutherland, in her 92nd year.
Beloved wife of the late Robert Sutherland (Bob), with whom she shared 59 wonderful years of marriage until his passing in 2016. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with laughter, family and travel.
Jean was a devoted and loving mother to her four children, Barbara (Paul), Linda (Ross), Rob (Kelly), and Mary (Charlie) She was a beloved grandmother to Alexandra (Andrew), Andrew (Halyna), Michael (Eliza), Kevin, Margot (Dylan), Brian, Sam (Taissa), Maggie, Rachael (Liam), Natalia (Isaac) and Violet and a proud great-grandmother to Averi, Caileigh, Penny, Shepard and Benson. She was predeceased by her infant granddaughter Jane. Her family was her heart, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Jean is also survived by her sister Marilyn Gropp and brother-in-law Alex (Sandy) Sutherland (Linda).
A woman of extraordinary creativity, Jean was known for her artistic talent, her culinary talents, and her remarkable gift for music. Jean had an amazing singing voice and was an accomplished pianist. If you hummed a tune, she could play it effortlessly on the piano — with grace, joy, and finesse. She was an accomplished artist who created with oils, acrylics and watercolours.
Throughout her life, Jean gave generously of her time and talents. She was a dedicated volunteer with the Jaycettes, Westmount Golf and Country Club and Sunnyside Home, always giving back to her community with warmth and compassion.
Her “happy place” was the family cottage on Manitoulin Island — a place filled with memories of laughter, sunsets, and gatherings with loved ones. Jean and Bob spent many joyful days there, welcoming family and friends and creating a legacy of love that will live on for generations.
Jean will be remembered for her kindness, her creativity, and the music she brought into so many lives. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Special thanks to mom's personal support workers, especially Jenny, Natalie, Liduina and Julia, Beechwood Manor and the amazing team of doctors and nurses who provided outstanding care and support.
A private family service and a celebration of Jean’s life will be held at a future date.
