Obituary of Tiuley Alguindigue
Tiuley Alguindigue passed away surrounded by family on November 4, 2025, at age 65. Tiuley is survived by her husband, Ponnu (Kumaraswamy); children, Saroja, Kumary, Canmanie and Ildemaro; and granddaughters, Rami Tiuley Ponnambalam Freeman and Nila Carmen Ponnambalam Hilbrecht. Tiuley had breast cancer since 2018; we were blessed to see her live and shine as an extremely loving grandmother in recent years.
Born in Coro, Venezuela, on September 22, 1960, Tiuley moved to Canada in 1984. She held a Bachelor in Systems Engineering from Universidad Metropolitana in Caracas and a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto. A Latina database engineer in a male-dominated profession, Tiuley co-authored a C++ textbook to teach coding to new engineers and dedicated decades to students at the University of Waterloo as a computer and software engineering lab instructor.
Tiuley co-founded two choirs (one is a children's choir) to share Venezuelan music and culture. She welcomed newcomers to Waterloo region and touched many lives as a talented musician, knitter, cake-maker, party organizer and community-builder. Tiuley had a close connection to her Catholic faith and completed a Master’s degree in Catholic Thought at University of Waterloo. Although she was Catholic, she married an atheist Tamil man in 1984 in Venezuela and had great respect for and genuine interest in all religions and cultures.
Her family and her home country, Venezuela, remained deeply important to her. She kept close relationships with siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews across the globe. An avid explorer, she was fortunate to be able to discover many places and enjoy her granddaughters Rami and Nila until the very end of her life.
