Obituary of Dr. John Dewey Bishop

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Jack Bishop. He died on Thursday, January 1, 2026 at his home at Winston Park in Kitchener.

He is predeceased by his father Judson and mother Louisa, along with his sisters Mary and Laura. He is also predeceased by his wife Jeanne. Jack is survived by his son Mike (Jackie) and his granddaughters Natalie and Sarah (Tyler).

Jack was born in Petrolia, Ontario and grew up there, leaving to pursue a dental career at the University of Toronto. He graduated in 1963, and after a brief stint in Smith Falls, decided to begin his own dental practice in downtown Kitchener for over 53 years.

In between patients, he was often on the telephone talking to friends and acquaintances from the many service clubs of which he was a part. This was Jack’s true passion! He was a longtime member of the Royal Order of Jesters, along with Lions Club International, and he was instrumental in founding the local Lions Club of Kitchener. He was a committed supporter for the Dog Guides program, helping to raise over $900,000 over the years.

Jack was also a founding member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, serving as the president from 1972 to 1976. He was often responsible for acquiring and caring for sponsors over the years, and he maintained friendships with those he dealt with for decades.

Jack was part of the selection of the Kitchener-Waterloo Citizen of the Year, an award that he won in 1984. He was also a tireless worker in providing the local Santa Claus parade.

Whenever he had spare time, he liked to golf at Westmount Golf and Country Club, a place that he was a member of since the 1960s.

So, it is with sadness that we say goodbye to Jack, and as one of his friends recently stated, “He had a pretty good run.”

We would like to thank the staff at the local hospitals who treated Jack well during his recent stays, along with the committed staff at Winston Park, who always treated him with kindness.

Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held at the Westmount Golf and Country Club, 50 Inverness Drive, Kitchener, on Sunday, January 25, 2026 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Friends and relatives are invited to stop by for a drink and to share a story or two about Jack. At Jack’s request, there will be no eulogies, however, feel free to upload any pictures that you have of Jack to be shown throughout the event. A picture is worth a thousand words. Pictures can be sent to: drjbishoplifephotos@gmail.com. They will be accepted until January 15 at noon.

In lieu of flowers, condolences for the family or donations to the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides may be made through www.erbgood.com.
