Obituary of Wayne Mathew Johnson

January 12, 2026 - Age 76

Wayne Mathew Johnson passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026, at the age of 76, surrounded by the love and comfort that defined his life. After a courageous battle with cancer, he left this world with the same grace, kindness, and quiet strength that touched so many hearts throughout his journey.

Born in Walkerton, Ontario, Wayne built a beautiful life in Waterloo, Ontario, where he devoted himself to raising his family, serving his community, and creating lasting connections wherever he went. He spent over 30 fulfilling years with Grand River Transit, where his warm smile and steady hand made every ride a little brighter for passengers. In retirement, he cherished part-time driving for Westhill Retirement Residence, forming genuine friendships with the residents and delighting in accompanying them on outings and events.

Wayne's adventurous spirit shone brightly during his earlier years as a tractor-trailer operator, when he crisscrossed North America behind the wheel, collecting stories and experiences that he loved to share with anyone who would listen. He treasured his time at Spring Valley Park, where seasonal stays brought rounds of golf, games of horseshoes, laughter with friends, and a perfect way to unwind after a busy week.

A lifelong hockey enthusiast, Wayne coached, played, and cheered with passion. He held season tickets to the Kitchener Rangers for decades, sharing countless memorable games with friends and colleagues who became like family.

Above all, Wayne was a devoted family man whose heart overflowed with love. He is survived by his daughters Cora, Crystal (Brent), and Pamela (Scott) and their mother, Sue. He was an incredibly proud grandpa to Brittany (Colin), Anderson, Liam, and Lincoln, creating magical moments they will carry forever. He was also a younger brother to Elaine and will be fondly remembered by many extended family members and dear friends he nurtured over the years.

Wayne held a special place in his heart for his predeceased loved ones—his father Sylvester, sister Lorraine, and his deeply cherished mother Audrey, whose memory he always kept close and honored with unwavering affection.

Known for his generosity,  reliability and keen sense of humor, Wayne was always ready to lend a hand, keep a promise, make someone laugh or simply be there when needed. One of his greatest joys was bringing holiday magic to life as Santa Claus, donning his bright red suit and white beard to pose for photos, surprise children on Christmas Eve with appearances, and spread wonder and laughter along the way. His warmth turned ordinary moments into cherished family memories and joyful gatherings with friends and coworkers.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate team on the Palliative Care Unit at WHRN-Chicopee, whose dedicated care and support brought comfort and peace during this challenging time. Their kindness has been a true blessing.

Cremation has taken place. Friends and family are warmly invited to a visitation at Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A celebration of Wayne's life will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception in the Fireside Reception Room. In the spring, his urn will be interred at Parkview Cemetery.

Wayne's legacy is one of love, dependability, adventure, and joy. He will be deeply missed and forever celebrated by all whose lives he brightened. In lieu of flowers, condolences for the family or donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Society of Waterloo-Wellington (a cause close to Wayne’s heart in memory of his mother) may be arranged through www.erbgood.com.
