Obituary of Gail Douglas
August 27, 1935 – February 15, 2026
Gail passed away peacefully with family by her side on Sunday, February 15, 2026 at the age of 90.
She is survived by her husband Donald Schmidt, sons Geoffrey (Val), Kevin, Derek (Dianna) Douglas, and daughter-in-law Jill Livingstone. Proud Nanny Gail to Brian (Melissa), Brittany (Cael), Jessica, Emma, and Arden. Also Jim, Mandy, and families. Gail will be deeply missed by Gwen and Larry Degen, George and Patricia Selgrad, and many friends.
Born to Jean and Lawrence Virtue in Ottawa. Predeceased by her first husband Brian Douglas (1974).
Gail enjoyed family gatherings and was instrumental in shaping her grandchildren’s lives. She reveled in canoeing with Ancient Mariners, Swinging Eights square dancing, and teaching Tai Chi. Gail taught shorthand at Conestoga College for many years, and earned her theology degree in California. She was passionate about travel after spending summers working as a student in Banff, Lake Louise, and Digby. She delighted in trips to China, cross country travel of Canada and the United States, and Caribbean voyages. Gail was an avid theatre goer, and loved to laugh. Gardening was her therapy and super power.

Visitation will take place at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S, Waterloo, on Monday, February 23, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the Memorial Service to begin in the funeral home’s chapel at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the funeral home’s Fireside Reception Room. Private interment at Memory Gardens Cemetery will be held at a later date.
