Obituary of Susan "Sue" Jane Petzke (nee Sandford)

Passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 19, 2026, with loved ones by her side after a long and brave journey with cancer.

Born April 24th, 1949 in Kitchener, Ontario. Daughter of George and Mildred Sandford. She was married to James Petzke in 1969.

Susan was known for her gentle spirit and listening ear. She had a way of making everyone feel seen and cared for. If a friend or family member was in need, she would, without hesitation, rush out the door without a second thought. Her kindness wasn’t loud or showy; it was constant, dependable and deeply felt.

She found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Susan loved playing cards or Bingo where laughter and friendly competition filled the room. Susan was a long time bowler at Towne Bowl, Waterloo Lanes and Victoria Bowl. She also loved baking and sharing homemade treats that brought her family together around the table. Her kitchen was a place of warmth, comfort and amazing food.

Above all, Susan's greatest pride was her family. She nurtured generations with love, patience, and wisdom. Her presence will be deeply missed but forever remembered. She was truly the heart of the family.

She leaves behind a family who will continue to carry her kindness forward in the way they care for one another.

Susan is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, James. Her loving children, Laurie and Matthew, her devoted grandsons, Kyle (Ashley), Austin (Kelsey), Bowe (Cassidy), Cole (Cora), Austin and Damon. As well as her cherished great grandchildren, Emmett, Abbie-Jean, Finleigh, Paisley, Scarlett, Emelia and Charlotte.

Predeceased by brother Bill Sandford and sister Catherine Hess (Sandford). Survived by brothers Richard, Paul and Brian Sandford.

Her fight over the last several years could not have been done without the dedication of the staff and volunteers at Waterloo Wellington Regional Cancer Centre and those working within WRHN.

Cremation has taken place. In accordance with Susan’s wishes, no funeral service will take place.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the WRHN Foundation - Cancer Centre, or a charity of your choice. Condolences for the family may be arranged through the funeral home.
