It is with deep sadness, we announce that Andrew “Andy” James Stubbs passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, at Waterloo Region Health Network – Midtown (formerly Grand River Hospital), after a lengthy illness.

Beloved father of Helen Broom (Aron Broom) and Dan Stubbs (Vita Saelzer), and cherished grandfather of Brylen, Alex, and Andrew Broom.

Survived by his sisters, Dianne Hems (Rob Hems) and Christina Stubbs. Predeceased by his brother Donald Stubbs, and his parents, Ann and James “Jim” Stubbs.

Andy was a prolific editor of Canadian literature, an expert of writing theory, an award-winning poet, a champion of creative writing, and dedicated professor of English. A graduate of York University, he devoted much of his 30-year career to teaching writing at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Regina. He will be remembered not only for his love of learning, but also for the warmth and encouragement he brought to all his students.

Andy was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and great-uncle. You could always find him at family celebrations, engaged in deep conversation, telling old jokes, connecting the pieces of a complex historical biography, or playing guitar and piano by ear. He was fiercely protective of his loved ones; his kindness had no limit; no request made was too large to be met. He will be forever remembered as one of the greatest road hockey goalies of all time.

Special thanks to the incredible staff at the Waterloo Region Health Network, both Midtown and Queen’s locations, for their dedicated care of our Andy.
