March 29, 1929 – April 6, 2026
Flora was born on March 29, 1929, in Montreal, where she grew up with her sister and 4 brothers while helping to raise her 3 younger brothers. She trained and worked as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal. She married George Cross, the father of her six children, in 1952. Over the next 10 years, each of her first five children was born in a different city from one coast to the other, as she supported George in his studies at universities across Canada.
They finally settled in Waterloo where their final child was born, and the children all grew up.
In later years, Flora returned to her studies and became a social worker employed by Family and Children Services of Waterloo Region. She married Arthur Cowan and they enjoyed many years of hiking and travel as well as a busy social schedule.
Flora was a passionate and accomplished Scottish Country dancer for years, travelling to different events and competitions throughout Canada and the United States. Her sense of humour, joie de vivre and genuine interest in other people were qualities that stood her in good stead throughout her life.
Flora reveled in her family and was a proud and enthusiastic supporter of all her children and grandchildren in their various endeavours and activities. Always keen on any opportunity for family gatherings, Flora delighted in being part of all family celebrations.
Flora is survived by her children, Pamela (Peter), Lynn (David), Jill (Stephen), Stuart (Karen), Lesley (Tom) and Peter (Rosa). Also survived by fourteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, her younger brother Archie and many nieces and nephews. She is also remembered by Arthur’s children Bill, Matthew, Patricia and Robin.
The family would like to thank the incredible health care workers from the Wright Neighbourhood in The Village at University Gates for their compassionate care and love given to Flora over the past six years.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 2:00 pm.
