Obituary of Monica Thompson

Passed away at WRHN @ Queen’s Blvd. (formerly St. Mary’s Hospital) on Friday, May 1, 2026, at the age of 90.

Monica was born in Tattershall Bridge, Lincolnshire, England, on July 29, 1935, as the middle daughter of Harold and Annie Leonard. Being the daughter of a headmaster, she was always destined to be a teacher. Monica married Jim Thompson in 1960 and in 1967 moved from England to Waterloo, Ontario. Monica spent over 30 years teaching music and English as a second language in Waterloo Region.

Monica and Jim always loved to travel and after retiring travelled extensively throughout the world. A favourite trip, repeated many times, was to spend the Canadian winter in New Zealand and Australia. They also made frequent trips back to England, most recently during the summer of 2025. Monica also enjoyed time with her granddaughter Danhui.

Monica was predeceased by her mother and father, older sister Barbara, younger sister Sylvia and younger brother Alan.

Monica is survived by her husband of over 65 years, Jim, son William and partner Lorraine, granddaughter Danhui and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Jim and William would like to thank Monica’s family doctor, Dr. M F Dawood, for his care of Monica over many years, as well as Dr. Richard Upenieks and the 7th floor team at St. Mary’s Hospital for their care and compassion during Monica’s recent illness.

As expressions of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
