Obituary of Ann George

November 26, 1931 – May 1, 2026

Ann George was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on November 26, 1931. Growing up, her family moved around various US cities, ending up in Detroit where Ann spent her teenage years. She learned to drive at 12, only reluctantly giving up her driver’s licence aged 93. Ann studied education at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, qualifying and working as a teacher for some years. In 1955, she was set up on a blind date with the man who turned out to be the love of her life and husband for 69 years, Rolf George.

In 1966, Ann and Rolf moved to Waterloo with their three small children, Kate, Julie, and Matthew, where Rolf started a position as professor of philosophy. Ann supported his work, throwing parties for graduate students, hosting visitors, and moving the family abroad for sabbaticals. In 1979, Ann bought a working apple farm near Meaford, hosting many visitors there over the years as well as producing thousands of bushels of apples. Ann loved gardening, weaving, reading, attending classical music concerts and theatre, and travelling.

Ann was predeceased by her daughter Kate and her husband Rolf. She leaves behind her daughter Julie (Simon), son Matthew (Veronica), grandchildren Hannah (Jack), Isadore (Rosie), Paola and Amelia and great-granddaughter Evelyn. She will be missed by all her family and friends.
