David J. Martens went to be with His Lord, at the age of 90, on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at University Gates in Waterloo. Born in Coaldale, Alberta, he received most of his formal schooling in British Columbia. After high school, he started a long, rewarding career in the HVAC industry in BC and continued in Ontario, after a term of volunteer service with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).
Predeceased by his parents, Peter and Barbara, and his siblings Peter and Frank, David is survived by his wife Alice, whom he met while volunteering with MCC in Ailsa Craig, Ontario. They would have celebrated 68 years of marriage this June. They enjoyed traveling, including several cruises and many tours of Europe.
David always enjoyed singing at church and in choirs, and he especially enjoyed performing in male quartets. He was an active, faithful member of Grace Mennonite Brethren Church.
He is fondly remembered by his son John (Dawn) Martens, daughter Joy (Rob) Gleeson, grandchildren Bethany (Scott) Moelker, Deanna (Nathaniel) Oliver, Miriam (Karl Armstrong) Martens, Daniel Martens (Rachael Liness), by his siblings Margaret (Doug) Symons, Victor (Diane) Martens, Barb (Don) Wilkie, and by six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S, Waterloo, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will take place in the chapel of the funeral home on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Reception will be held in the Fireside Reception Room following the service.
