I had the privilege of working with Prof. Wirjanto along with Prof. Samuel Wong and four fellow PhD students at UWaterloo on a project about the impact of climate change in Canada. Although we were in the same department, we had no direct connection before we approached him for guidance on this manuscript in his field. He welcomed us so warmly and his comments were always sharp and insightful. I remember that we sent him a long email late one Wednesday night in the summer of 2025, and he had replied with full, detailed comments by the next morning. Knowing now what he was going through at that time, it makes his generosity and care all the more moving. We are so grateful and will miss him deeply. Our deepest condolences to his family.

Tony Wirjanto and his research was part of my formative years in obtaining a research assistant position at the Bank of Canada and choosing the Queen's Economics Department (QED) PhD programme. It was capped off with Tony serving as my external examiner for my PhD in 2004.
We never had the privilege of collaborating or working together. However, through students and conferences we were able to keep in touch. A few weeks ago, I was shocked to hear from James Thompson about Tony entering into hospice. It afforded me the opportunity to write to Tony to express my gratitude to him about his impact on my career. His service today underscored the depth and impact on many others. Rest in peace, Tony.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Tony's passing. Tony and I were colleagues in the Department of Economics at the University of Waterloo, where we overlapped as assistant professors from 1991 to 2000. Those were formative years in our careers, and I have many fond memories of our time together.
What I remember most about Tony was not only his intellect and professionalism, but also his kindness and sense of humor. He was a thoughtful colleague. He was someone whose presence made the department a better place to work. Academic life can be demanding and Tony brought a sense of collegiality and good humor that made those years more enjoyable.
Although our paths diverged over time, I have always looked back on our years at Waterloo with great affection. My heartfelt condolences to Tony's family, friends, students, and colleagues. He will be missed and I will always remember him.

Tony became my mentor the day I joined the University of Waterloo in 1999. He was so kind and generous with his time, whether with young faculty members or students. I looked up to him and learned how to be a dedicated teacher following his example. His research was way ahead of his time. He always had a smile on his face when he was at the university. I was privileged to have worked and published research with him. He will be much missed.

Tony was a wonderful person who always encouraged me to believe in myself. He was supportive, wise, and deeply helpful to me. As someone who has sometimes had doubts about the area I am working in, time series, I truly appreciated Tony’s encouragement and guidance, especially given his expertise in the field. We were deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of our neighbor, Tony. It still feels unreal. He was such a good and friendly person, and also a respected scholar and professor—someone everyone admired and enjoyed having in the neighborhood.
We will always remember the simple moments: seeing him clearing snow in the winter, taking care of the lawn in the summer, and greeting everyone with his warm smile. Those everyday scenes now feel especially precious.
Tony was blessed with a wonderful family. His wife, Carol—who is also our fellow countrywoman—is kind, capable, and caring, and his daughter, Christine, is beautiful, talented, and thoughtful. They were the joy of his life, and he was so proud of them.
He will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace, and may Carol and Christine find strength and comfort in the love he left behind.

I had the privilege of knowing Tony for more than two decades, first as a colleague and later as a neighbor. My family and I will always remember his warm smile, gentle wave, and the kindness he showed to everyone around him. Some of my fondest memories are from the years when our families lived nearby and Tony would honk and wave as he drove by while I was walking my children to school.
He was not only an accomplished scholar and teacher, but also a thoughtful friend and caring neighbor. Tony will be greatly missed, and we feel fortunate to have known him.
Tony spoke often and proudly of Carol and Christine, and it was always so touching to feel how deeply he loved his family. Our heartfelt condolences to Carol, Christine, and all who loved him.

Tony has been a very fine gentleman and great scholar; I still recall that he helped me a lot in my early academic career in 2010s, and I am always grateful for his very kind support. Tony and his family have been dear friends of ours for over three decades. Through both joyful seasons and difficult times, our friendship endured and deepened.
Tony was an extraordinary intellect, but what I will remember most was his kindness, thoughtfulness, and genuine care for others. He was down-to-earth, easy to talk to, and always interested in the people around him. Our families shared many meals together over the years, often at Cameron Restaurant, with our elderly parents joining us around the table.
On May 25, we visited Tony at the hospice. He was fully present, lucid, and spoke openly about his faith. He shared stories of his devoted Christian parents, who faithfully served the church, and how they prayed fervently for his healing when he was a frail and often-sick child. He recalled that at age 13, his health dramatically improved, and his remarkable intellectual gifts began to emerge - the beginning of a distinguished academic journey that would touch the lives of countless students, colleagues, and scholars.
We also spent Christmas Day 2024 together. My sons were fascinated by Tony's stories, especially his description of the photographic memory that helped him excel during his graduate studies. With a smile, he reflected on how that remarkable ability gradually faded over the years as life became fuller with work, family, friendships, and the occasional beer. Despite his brilliance, Tony carried himself with humility, warmth, and a wonderful sense of humour.
Tony leaves behind a remarkable legacy of intellect, faith, friendship, and love. We take comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his beloved parents and at home with his Heavenly Father.
May Carol and Christine find comfort amid their sorrow and strength in the treasured memories they shared with him.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Tony’s passing.
Tony was the person who interviewed me for admission into the MQF program, and later, as I was finishing my master’s degree, he served as the second reviewer for my master’s report. Beyond his academic guidance, what I will remember most is his kindness.
Tony made a lasting impact on many of us through both his mentorship and his character. I am grateful to have known him, and I will miss him dearly.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Tony's passing.
As I looked through old emails today, I was reminded of the kindness and generosity Tony showed his students. During my MQF time, I was not always the easiest student. More than once I submitted assignments later than I should have. Yet Tony was always patient, understanding, and supportive.
Tony was also the supervisor for my master research paper. As usual, I submitted it only a few days before the deadline. Tony read it on the same day and quickly arranged for a second reader on time. This tells how much he cared about his students.
Today I came across a note he sent after missing our Class of 2019 convocation. He felt the need to apologize, and he ended the note with these words:
"As you all know, MQFers are members of my family."
That was Tony. He didn't just built the MQF program—he built a family.
It was a privilege to be one of your MQFers. Thank you, Tony. You will be deeply missed.

My sincere condolences to Tony's family and the quantitative research community for this great loss. Tony was my professor at UW MQF program from 2003-2004. He gave me guidance on research direction for my Master essay on cointegration - specifically introducing me to the concept of bootstrapping for an empirical distribution. It was a time where I learned to learn and explore a research topic by myself, embracing the ambiguity and framing problem to search for answers. In the age of AI, it is tempting to outsource this hard act of thinking, which can produce an uncapped number of ideas in seconds. Tony and I debated on the merits on how students can learn fast using AI, but faster learning does not necessarily mean better learning. I will miss seeing him every year at the MFQ Advisory Board, and his deep passion about finance. I can only hope that he is feeling great and embrace our friend Ken Sang Tang, another great professor, when they meet again.

I had the honour of co-supervising Tony’s PhD thesis in the Department of Economics at Queen’s University. We also wrote a comment on a paper that appeared in the Journal of Econometrics. Tony was a very hardworking and talented researcher. His contributions to the field of econometrics and statistics are important and he has a permeable home in halls of Canadian scholars.

Before the Waterloo campus became smoke free, Tony once saw me smoke a cigar outside of M3. "I didn't know you had this kind of taste," he said, somewhat jokingly. "Not really," I replied with a shrug, "I just find life too difficult so I occasionally need one." He stopped and sat down next to me. After hearing about my struggles, he empathized with me deeply, and entrusted me with how much weight he himself was carrying on his own shoulders caring for his family. We bonded immediately; our shared struggles defined our friendship. Ever since then, we always greeted each other in the hallway by cheering each other on. Our greetings were simple. We didn't exchange too many words, but we each knew exactly what the other meant to say when we simply looked into each other's eyes. This shared understanding meant a world to me. For much of the past 15 years, it gave me the courage to carry on. Tony was the kind of person who cared deeply about everyone else, except himself. I am utterly devastated by his passing.
