Obituary of Joachim "John" Werner Hirtle

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Joachim (John) Werner Hirtle, age 70, on June 20, 2026. He passed away in the company of his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.

John leaves behind his son Kelan (Sarah), grandchildren Homer, Noah, and his daughter Carin. He is predeceased by parents Fridolin Karl (2004), and Hilde (2021); survived by two sisters Regina, Ruth (Dave) and two brothers Karl (Mireille), Peter (Donna); as well as nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

The loss of a father and brother leaves an immense void that words cannot truly fill. Sorrow continually creeps into our thoughts of his absence and of the continued life he might have had.

John was born in Lorräch, Germany on November 18, 1955, to parents who survived the hardships of WWII. In May of 1957, the family immigrated to Canada and settled in Guelph, Ontario. He grew up with a passion for sports and was both an enthusiastic participant and devoted fan, especially when it came to hockey and fishing.

He spent many years at the General Electric (ABB) transformer plant on Woodlawn Road and eventually retiring in Palmerston.

Over this past year John battled several health challenges, including lung cancer. While initial treatments showed promise, the disease became increasingly aggressive in recent weeks and ultimately proved to difficult to overcome.

John’s cremated remains will be laid to rest alongside of his parents in Waterloo. A celebration of life will be announced and held in early September.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
