Obituary of Murray Otto Herz

Our loving and merciful Heavenly Father called Murray home on July 10, 2026, in his 86^th year, surrounded by the love of his entire family and Pastor Roggow.

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live.”  John 11:25

Survived by his beloved wife and best friend Norma; his daughter Heather (Rob) and son Paul (Michelle); his grandchildren Angel (Joram) and Isaac and Joel; great grandchildren Jaxon, Liam, Vanessa and Logan.

Predeceased by his parents, Ruby and Otto Herz, and his sister, Anita Schoch (Jim).

Murray met the love of his life at teachers’ college in Stratford. They married on July 28, 1962, in Fergus and would have celebrated their 64^th anniversary. His teaching career spanned 35 years with the Waterloo County Board of Education. He was also Principal at Christ Lutheran School. In retirement he found satisfaction working at The Bay but soon found his calling at the Erb & Good Funeral Home, where he worked as an FDA for many years. Murray’s top priority was family and in his children’s words, “He was always present”. He was a faithful and long-time serving member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. He sang in the Church choir, and the Christmas Cantatas and played in the church band. He also played in a local band called New Horizons.

Murray was a championship bowler and enjoyed playing tennis and hockey. He was a competitive card player (Wizard, Cribbage, Bridge, Solo). But his passion was following the Montreal Canadiens and the Kitchener Rangers. He volunteered as a hockey instructor with the KMHA and was a program director at Pike Lake Huronia Hockey Camp.

Murray was a gentle and kind man with a wonderful sense of humour. He was a devoted father, loving grandfather and cherished Poppa.

Visitation will take place at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S, Waterloo, on Friday, July 17, 2026, from 1 – 3 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m.  Funeral service to take place at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 322 East Ave., Kitchener, on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Roggow officiating. Reception will immediately follow the service in the Church Hall. Interment to follow at Memory Gardens.
