Obituary of John Hatashita

John Hatashita was reunited with his beloved Joan, his late wife of 60+ years. He passed peacefully and painlessly in the early morning of 15 July 2026.

John was a devoted husband, excellent father, loving grand- and great-grandfather, uncle, brother, friend and sensei. 

He was a well-known local businessman, fitness advocate and judo instructor, having founded and operated Hatashita Jewellers, The Hatashita Judo Club, The Waterloo Fitness Centre, fashion stores The Pot Belly Stove and Kiku’s, plus several other commercial enterprises. His judo career led him to personal triumphs in competition then into instruction and coaching, where he was known as “Sensei” to a generation of champion Judoka, including three local athletes who went on to represent Canada at the Olympic Games.

In their personal lives, John and Joan raised five children, grandparented eleven and great-grandparented three. They were well known in the local Christian community and took part in missionary trips abroad to spread love and demonstrate self-sacrifice to all those who knew them.

John is famous for an unshakeable faith, an unfiltered Boomer’s sense of humour, his love of sailing, his unwavering dedication to his family and for loving one woman for 70 years.
