Obituary of Myrna Lyn Dow (nee Thompson)

With profound gratitude for her life and deep love in our hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Myrna Lyn Dow, 75, of Kitchener, Ontario, on Thursday, July 23, 2026, surrounded by her loving family at Innisfree House Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer, met with grace and strength.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband, William “Bill” Dow, her daughters, Laura (Christopher) Peace and Cheryl (Jason) Grove and her cherished grandchildren, William, Katie, Abby, Felicity and Julia as well as her sisters, Susan (the late Robert Roy) and Kathy Harries; nieces and nephews and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, David and Norma Thompson.

Born in Simcoe, Ontario, Myrna was known from an early age for her joyful spirit, steady nature, and warmth toward others. Affectionately known as “Mini Myrn,” she may have been small in stature, but she filled every room with her warmth and presence. Her kindness, gentle spirit and vibrant style, touched the hearts of everyone who knew her.

In 1972, she married William “Bill” Dow, the love of her life. Together they shared more than 50 years of devoted partnership, building a home filled with love, laughter, and connection. They especially cherished their travels together, with Destin, Florida holding a special place in their hearts. At home, they found just as much joy tending to their flowers and gardens, creating a beautiful backyard oasis that became a gathering place for family. It was a place where countless memories were made swimming in their backyard pool with their children and grandchildren, and one that brought them immense pride and happiness.

She was a devoted and deeply loving mother to her twin daughters, Laura (Peace) and Cheryl (Grove), and later a cherished grandmother who brought endless joy, comfort, and laughter to her grandchildren through her playful spirit, warm hugs, and treasured family traditions.

As an avid golfer, Myrna welcomed countless sunrises from the first tee, easily spotted by her brightly coloured golf attire and vibrant golf balls. Her bright colours were only outshone by her radiant spirit. Kind and welcoming, she formed deep and lasting friendships both on and off the golf course. She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her many friends.

Myrna dedicated over 20 years of service to St. Mary’s Hospital, working in the ICU, Cardiac, Diabetes Clinic and many other specialized areas. She was known for her compassion and kindness, and for her ability to make patients and families feel cared for during difficult times. Myrna was the recipient of the Reverend Rip Kirby award of excellence, a prestigious staff honour in recognition of her outstanding dedication to patient care, the hospital’s mission and overall service excellence. Myrna also worked part time for over 40 years with podiatric consultants and enjoyed every minute, especially the long-term friendships she formed with the team. In addition to her work at the hospital and with the podiatric team, she worked alongside Dad in his business ventures. As his biggest supporter, she wore many hats and was always ready to help wherever she was needed. Together, they made a wonderful team in both business and life.

She carried a deep and personal faith throughout her life. She lived with quiet devotion and pure heart, and she will be remembered as a good and faithful servant.

Her light will continue to shine in the hearts of those who loved her.

The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff and doctors at Princess Margaret Hospital, the WRHN Cancer Centre, Dr. Kuang, Dr. Ler, and the exceptional staff of 6B and Innisfree House for their compassionate care and kindness.

Myrna’s family will receive relatives and friends at Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S, Waterloo, on Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Funeral service for family and friends will then take place in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Chris Fickling officiating. Reception to follow in the funeral home’s Fireside Reception Room. Private family interment to take place at Norfolk Oakwood Cemetery (Simcoe, ON).
