Obituary of Ronald Walter Gehl
Ronald Walter Gehl passed away peacefully, with family by his side, on Sunday, July 26, 2026, in his 94th year.
A lifelong resident of Waterloo Region, Ron is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 65 years, Rita (Hehn), his children, Kathy (Doug), Ken (Janette), Robert (Emily), Joanne (John), his sister, Christine (Dave), his sister-in-law, Mary Anne, siblings of his wife Rita, and his many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his parents, Walter & Ida and his brother Jim (2024).
Ron was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a devout believer and follower of Jesus Christ, living out his beliefs daily through his compassion, kindness and devotion to his family.
For many years, Ron dedicated his time to mentoring youth as a Cub Scout leader. He volunteered for many years at Everton Scout Camp and was a proud Gilwellian! An avid lover of the outdoors, he treasured taking his family camping, sharing his appreciation for nature and leading lively campfire songs under the stars.
He also held a deep affection for his hometown, taking great joy in attending Waterloo City Council meetings and sharing stories about the history of the city.
After retiring from 38 years at Lear Seating (formerly General Springs), Ron and Rita enjoyed travelling together. They especially loved their trips to Florida and attending theatre productions in Pennsylvania.
During the last five years at University Gates, Ron embraced the community wholeheartedly. He participated in every program he could and will be deeply missed by the many wonderful staff members and residents. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at University Gates LTC for the exceptional care, kindness and friendship they showed Ron throughout his time there.
Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo, on Thursday, July 30th, from 6-8 p.m.
A private family internment will take place at a later date.
