Obituary of Jean Marie Niederer
Jean Marie Niederer of Waterloo, Ontario, passed peacefully on August 12, 2026, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply, following a lengthy illness.
Jean was a woman who enjoyed creating beautiful handcrafted items with her hands, cared for others with her heart, and left a little bit of herself wherever she went.
For more than 50 years, Jean dedicated herself to nursing, caring for others with the same quiet strength and compassion that she brought to everything in her life. After retiring, Jean and her husband, Gerry, traded the city for country life, where they ran a farm together. Eventually, they returned to the city, and enjoyed visiting a friend's home in Florida for many winters.
An avid craftswoman and quilter, Jean could turn fabric, thread, and imagination into something beautiful and comforting. Her generosity extended far beyond her own family, and she donated handmade blankets to children's hospitals for sick children to enjoy. She was also a respected writer whose work appeared in well-known magazines during her career — another reflection of her creativity and many talents.
Jean's greatest joy was her family. She treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren: David Niederer, Katrina Niederer, Melissa Adams, Zachary Martin, Owen (Bronwyn) Niederer, Richard, Josh, and Andrew Armstrong. In later years, she was delighted by her great-grandchildren, Rylan, Auden, and Hudson, who brought another special kind of happiness into her life.
Jean is survived by her son, Mike Niederer, his wife Sherry, daughter Chris Schaefer, her sister Linda, daughter in law Gail Niederer and her beloved grandchildren David, Katrina, Melissa, Zachary, Owen (Bronwyn), Richard, Josh, and Andrew , and great-grandchildren Rylan, Auden, and Hudson
She was predeceased by her parents, Isaiah and Katharine Sitler; her husband, Gerhard Niederer; her son, Tony Niederer; her sister, Nancy O'Brien; and her son-in-law, Don Martin.
A very special thank you goes to Jean's granddaughter, Melissa, also a PSW, who devoted months to caring for her grandmother. Her love, patience, and compassion gave Jean comfort and dignity during her final months, and her dedication meant more than words can express.
Jean leaves behind much more than memories. She leaves quilts made with love, words she put to paper, children she cared for, patients she helped, friends made throughout her life, and most importantly, a family who will carry her love forward.
Special thanks to Cedarview Retirement in Woodstock and to Clair Hills in Waterloo for their care. Jean made many friends at Cedarview with her bubbly personality, caring manner and witty conversations.
She was a caregiver by profession, a creator by nature, and a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother by heart.
Jean will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were blessed to have known her and loved her.
Jean's wishes were for a private cremation only, with no visitations or funeral service.
