Thursday, December 27, 2012
My sisters, cousins and I watched Uncle Jim grow from a fun, engaging Laurier university student - who ate Sunday night dinners my mom Helen, and dad Vern, worked hard to create from our garden - into an accomplished, recognized barrister and author, loving husband, father, grandfather, and patriarch.
As children, we were excited when Uncle Jim pulled up the driveway in his white, sputtering VW Beetle. We screamed with excitement when, within his first year practising law, he showed up Christmas Eve bearing ensembles of new ski equipment(!) for his nieces and nephew with soon-to-be Aunt Susan, whom our family embraced.
My family witnessed, and at times shared, Uncle Jim's early struggles which helped form complexities, resolutions, worth ethic. He thrived from such struggles, forming his own unique vision.
As children, we remember well and laugh at his painful yet enthusiastic 'tenor'ish' singing with my dad Vern, his sister Hilda and brother-in-law, Uncle Bill, at the piano on Christmas Eve. We, the children, watched in awe at the fun and love these siblings shared with each other.
We admired his indomitable spirit, courage, intelligence, values, and humour. We appreciated and respected his empathy for those who received his gentle strength, time and quiet support.
He gave solid, fatherly advice after our father's passing in 1987 and provided support and comfort with our youngest sister Vicki's passing in 1982.
He reminded us to 'stand tall, dear' in the wake of what seemed insurmountable adversity. Uncle Jim created for us a standard and level of excellence our children advise we have passed on to them.
Needless to say, Uncle Jim provided intangible gifts, and we are grateful.
He will be missed.

We were so incredibly sad to hear the news of Jim's passing and our heartfelt thoughts go out to Susan, Sean, Ryan and the entire Neeb family. I remember fondly the early morning drives to the pool with Jim. Jim was a person who had an uncanny knack of sharing his unique perspective on life in an approachable and humourous way.

I will miss Uncle Jim and his visits, his gifts of my favourite chocolates, his kindness and care, his big handsome grin, and that cleft in his chin. Together we talked about family, memories, and all that was important to the two of us. I am so sad losing Uncle Jim - it feels like I have lost my father for the second time. My heart and love goes out to Aunt Susan, Sean and Ryan, their wives and their children.

Richard Buck, Roger Hunt and Marilyn Israel At Smith, Hunt, Buck It is with deep sadness that we accept Jim’s passing. Our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Susan, Sean, Ryan and extended family. Roger, Marilyn and I have a long history with Jim. Roger articled with Jim at the old firm and upon formation of the new firm, thereafter conducted many files with Jim. Marilyn knew and worked for Jim at the old firm since age 20. I have conducted more family law cases in my 39 year career as a litigator with Jim than any other counsel in Ontario. There were heated moments and there were lighter moments, there was always professionalism, and collegiality. James was a fierce and polished advocate-no holds barred. Roger and I will miss our annual “walk down memory lane lunch” with Jim which was to take place the day before he passed. Jim, you are in a more peaceful place. Good Bye!

Our heartfelt sympathy to Susan and family for the loss of such a compassionate, decent and sincere good man. We have fond memories that we would like to share.
1. We were captivated by his address to the Supreme Court of Canada and thrilled 359 days later for winning the decision after eight hard fought years.
2. We treasure the speech he made to us at our wedding.
3. We laugh when we watch Jim and Susan and their tablemates sing The Beatles song "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah", at our wedding reception.
We will always treasure these moments.
