I was first introduced to Michael in 2003, He was kind and quite observing.His teasing started immediately and he asked me, what kind of african react to Pepper the way you do. I was served a meal at his home, everything was spicy and almost uneatable for me. It was too spicy, tears were running, my noise was running. Simply a mess.My english wasnt good at the time and He tried to explain words to me as slowly as he could. From there, our families became friends, we had sunday activities, we went to the beach together at times at River No 2 or lakka and enjoyed a picnic. we had fun. Michael was always willing to play games. Sometimes, we went to school in the same car and He will always tell us (Jandeh, the driver, King, Coco)a random story, different each time. Michael loved to read from a young age. Aunty Frances, I want you to know that Michael was so proud of you and everything you have accomplished including the trips you took with him. Even after I moved, he will be sending me messages on facebook telling me about the country he had just visited. He enjoyed life and deeply loved his sister Jandeh. In 2008, we were in Bo, He were talking of how we all have grown and our abmission for the future. Michael wasn't shy, he stood tall and proud of whom he was. Michael, I will always remember your smile, the way we watch Harry Potter, Twilight after you have read all the books, and I was the lazy one always telling you that I will wait for the movies to come. Thanks for all the movies nights with icetea and shrimps chip, all the story and mostly for trusting me and allowing me to be apart of your life. Im grateful to have known you and sad to know that you are gone. The world is missing out of such an outstanding man, so bright and with good will for humanity. I love you Michael Fortune. I rest assured because You knew that I cared about you.
Who is going to remind of the little crio I know? Who will remind me that I can still visit more countries and learn more?
Certainly, remember that I love you, so happy to have known you.
Smile, be courageous, always do something, because Michael was Not a lazy man.

One of my favorite memories of Michael is from the Christmas we spent at Cape Coast--the Barclay-Fortunes, Manirakizas, Kyle and me. We were leaving from Abidjan, and the kids had been so good all morning, waiting patiently while Spes and I ran around with the last minute emails that never end. Michael and King climbed into the back of the car, balanced precariously on top of the luggage, their long bodies trying to find space. And they rode like that for 10 hours, without a word of complaint of being cramped or uncomfortable. It was just fun teenage boy banter--who was the best football player, who was the best rapper, who was the best dancer, with Kyle as the agreed final decision-maker on all these points. We had a wonderful holiday, but it is that drive that stands out most in my memory.

One summer, the family was living in an apartment, a walk away from McMaster University. Jandeh and Michael were enrolled in the summer sports camps for children. The children would ride their bikes to and from their home. In the afternoon, Cyril would pick them up and enjoy the trip back. Father, son, and daughter were together engrossed in the moment. I am very sad to hear Michael death. More so because he left the shore
of Sierra Leone hopping that with time when he comes back we will
welcome him in a happy and joyous way. And even more now as my brother
Michael is not hear to rely on any longer. Michael has been part of my
family for long time since I was in form three and now in University
through your willing support which he too was in favor. Michael was
such a nice and generous brother to me in all the years I got to know
him. He was always friendly, full of joy, concern for everyone. You
know I always like to leave with the Fortune family because since I
joined the family my life totally changed for good.
Michael was always source of good brother, friend for many age groups
who leave in and around Bo. He always offers sensible idea about
studying, learning and exercising. Emphasizing the value of education,
how to comport oneself and to behave in various situation and many
others. He was always such of good foot ball player, had deep insight
to human nature and was available to all as a sound brother or friend.
He was loyal and committed family member. He tell me many stories
about his family and their achievements and was proud of been member
of his family.
Michael also makes more family, as he was so kind, and he attracts
kind people. He had many good friends in the neighboring hood where he
lives with you and the family. They too will miss Michael, his stable
presence, his good humor and friendship. Michael will be firmly
remembered by all of us. He was a good citizen proud of his family and
his contribution. He was an asset to those around him and enjoys
staying around everybody. I will miss Michael quite and valuable
stability, his loyalty and commitment among many others.
Michael (Miko) was a very kind brother in so many ways. From what I
knew he was a brother, always helping friends and making sure nothing
goes wrong.
Thank you Michael for been an outstanding brother of good character I
will always remember you as one of my role model even though I'm older
than you but I gain so much from you. Michael you were special to me,
you call me Franklyn and we had this special brotherly relationship.

The death of our son Michael shows that life is like a journey. Michael has been our son.
Even when his Mom was here I was always ready to respond to her call and the calls of her children, drive them around especially to Senehun the home. When once they want to use vehicle even if their Mom is not around they do call me. It's was really shocked when Josie told us on the
Phone that our son is dead. Such shocking news put us down. Why? Was Michael ill?
Ooh No. But anyway Mommy Frances you need to take courage, such is life, it's really painful but take it easy. We all know you did your level best for Michael to get the best in life.

My heart breaks over the news of Michael's death, I became frustrated. More so because they had left the shores of Sierra Leone and I was sad. And even more now Michael isn't there to rely on as a son any longer.
Michael was a kind and generous child. In all the years that I have known Michael he was always friendly, full of joy, concerned for all of us. You know Michael always like to live with lots of people and over the years many young people - boys and girls alike have lived with different family and become part of many family. Michael was always a source of good advice to his friends for those many young friends and family who lived in around the compound in Bo (and in Freetown). He offered guidance and sensible advice to them about studying and learning emphasis the value in learning, how to comport oneself and to behave in various situations and many others. Even if they didn't listen to him they will remember the good and kind words and sentiments that he shared with them. He was always a good advisor, had deep insight into human nature and was available to all as a sound advisor.
Michael was a loyal and committed family member. He told friends many stories about his family and their achievements and he was proud of being a member of his family. He was always concerned about family responsibilities and taking part. He took a lot of sustenance from the relationships he had in Bo with various family members. Michael also made more family. As he was so kind he attracted kind people. He had many good friends. John Sayoh, Yamma, Maada, Pascal, Magbay, Frank, Samuel, Abduel Karim, Giikah,and so on. They too will miss Michael, his stable presence, his good humour and his friendship.
Micahel enjoyed reading, listen news, he likes sports, and he used that to make more friends. He even in fact asks his mother to help the less privileged friends, orphans and family members. He personally advocate for them.
Michael will be fondly remembered by all of us. He was a good citizen, proud of his family and his contribution. He was an asset to those around him and enjoyed being available for society. I will miss Michael's quiet and valuable stability, his loyalty and commitment and more than others, his friendship.
I will not disturb Michael again from his sleep for school, Mom Michael could wake up, and time for school is getting late, let us all take courage.

SPEECHLESS! UNBELIEVABLE! Such a precious brother with whom I've shared my whole life with just died. I must be dreaming...pls wake me up and say Michael is still alive (;_;). The grief I feel cannot be expressed. Michael, you were such an inspiration and a bosom. "LIFE IS UNFAIR". How could such a treasured Gem of our age just be taken from us at such a tender age. All your memories are lingering in my mind every second and I still can't accept the fact that you're no more. Michael, you have endless unfinished assignments: to complete school, take care of Mum and Dad, and Jandeh needs your love so much. Without you Michael, I would have been nothing as you really made me realize the morals of brotherhood. Even if Mom called Michael can't answer why? Michael there is no one to courage me or your Mom except God. I remember when we were always together even when Mommy travel, I'm always there to look after you as an elder brother. I remembered one day you got ill I took you to Choithram Hospital, for the rest of the night I was worried as Mom was not around. Your departures will create a vacuum which no one can fill. Mom shows so much love to you as the only son, yarning to see you educated and become important somebody in society. Who then can Mom relies on as a son? Only God who has called you can answer us.
But Mom, cry will not bring you happiness, trust God. He gave you Michael and He has again decided to take him for reasons best known to him. Who then can be around Jandeh as an elder brother, Jandeh stop crying all is not lost. John Sayoh, Yamma and all other friends why crying? Can that bring back Mikoh to life? No. So have faith in God. Even me, for the past nights, I do go to bed with cry, wake up with cry, I know I don't need to as that does not help me but is not easy for me to go without crying even though I have faith. Rest Michael, enjoy your sleep, Mommy will not shout your name again for you to wake up for school neither would she asked me to wake you up for school. But Michael, you left us at a time we needed you most, a time for you to come back home - Sierra Leone to buy you drink or be very nice to you as you used to do to me, since I'm now working, for you to enjoy the fruits of your Mom investment on my University.
